The sturcture of the personality according to Freud is threefold.

Id = This represents biological forces. It is also a constan in the personality. The id is governed by hedonism.

EGO = The Self, distinct from the external world. The surface of the personality, The part you show the world. The ego is governed by the "reality principle."

Id = desires but the the ego keeps in check. For example, 'A' wants to kill or say, slander somebody but 'M' (in this case the ego) realizes the consequences of BRAZEN act of slandering or UNFORGIBABLE act of killing. A sane 'A' thus would not slander or kill anybody.

(note A is Angry young man; M is the Mass)

The ego develops with experience, and accounts for developmental differences in behaviour. For example a 5 year old might cry because somebody called him a wimp/a joker, but a 29 year old would be expected to answer that charge, fairly and honestly. THAT IS A HEALTHY SENSE OF EGO.

Super ego.

Later, people.
