Thanks to GP-ji for posting those old SCN threads containing the then SCNers' debates with someone who called himself (or herself?) Maodai.

I clearly remember Rajesh Babu Shrestha's telling me then he had evidence that Maodai was posting his stuff from somewhere in Asia -- an assertion also echoed publicly then by others on SCN. Anyway, not that it matters now, but I wonder where Maodai these days.

Anyway, on a recent development, the Maoists have apologized -- yes, apologized -- for their various acts of extortion. CLearly, they have sensed
that the public mood in Nepal is increasingly growing them. I, for one, am
not going to change my opinion of the Maoists as dangerously misguided
fools because of their apologies.

I say that because I have long believed that the Maoists have every right to exist in a democracy and try to persuade people of their views through election campaigns and so on.

But their relentless use of force, coercion, brutality and their crushing of dissent and all that is what makes Maoism (and its attendant demands in Nepal) an unappealing alternative to our democracy, however flawed the latter may be.
