According to a news in The Kathmandu Post, (see the following link: (http://www.kantipuronline.com/kpost_html/kp_frontpg.htm#CAAN stops Taiwan carrier from flying to Nepal ) CAAN first made an agreement with Mandarin Airlines and then cancelled the proposed direct flight link between Kathmandu and Taipei. I think our mandarins had to be little bit more brave by now. Needless to say, they did this to appease China. I don't know how the direct flight between Nepal and Taipei would have made China irritated, but it definitely seems our CAAN people thought it that way. In the time, when our tourism sector is reeling from the shock of continuous tragic events that directly hit the tourist arrival rate, we need more tourists and we can't just make foolish decisions. Now, I don't know if China objected the flight. I don't see any reason for that too. I mean Hongkong has direct flight between Taipei and Hongkong, and so has USA and a lot other nations. In fact, Taipei's China Airlines(?) is one of the most successful and widely linked aviation corporations in the world.China itself has just allowed link between Kinmen and Matsu to mainland in its bid to integrate the tiny renegade island to its fold. If everybody is benefitting from Taiwan, and its hardworking and rich population of 20m, whynot we! We have very weak governments these days. They want to become more pro-Chinese than China herself. If you have governments that care more about the wellbeing of foreigners than our own, then what can we do! We are not colony of China, and even if China has reacted negatively and formally, we don't have to obey that. Why should we poor nation pay for China's national policy? I don't support the notion of independent Taiwan, but I just don't understand how allowing those pious tourists who want to visit Lumbini an opportunity of direct flight would undermine our basic commitment. Let's be friendly to China, but in that process don't forget not to harm our own people, and ourselves.Let's be brave!

Dear Biswoji, You forgot one important think re: CAAN's refusal to start a direct air link between Taipei and Kathmandu. If the HMG allows a direct link, then not only Buddhist piligrims from taiwan will come to Nepal but also many taiwanese spies and free tibet activists along with $$$ and arms will fill the monastaries of Bouddhanath, Swayambhu and Lo Manthang. So, the government made a very GOOD decision by not letting this happen. Trailokya Kathmandu

If Pakistan is using Nepal as a base to fight against India for Kashmir .. why not let Taiwan use Tibatans in Nepal fight against China? Should not we tell Pakistan to clean up their act in Nepal.. ..Pakistani diplomats with fake Indian currency .. RDX.. sneaking into India from Nepal without Passport/Visa.. etc?

Trailokyaji: Welcome back to this site. Hope you will enjoy badaa dashain in Nepal. I think it is not rational defense. Taiwanese can come to nepal from any other way now. They can come to Hongkong directly, and then to Nepal. Or they can go to India and then come to Nepal. Why should Taiwanese come to Nepal to spy China, if they want to spy China , they can go to China directly. There are millions in China. We should let them come in. It is economy, my friend!
