Nearly 3 weeks after the NYC attack, back in Boston, one of the Terminals were evacuated. The reason, the security check was open, the guy working there had gone for coffee and some person was able to walk through security without being checked at all. He notified security and, the whole terminal was evacuated and all the passengers had to be rechecked in.

The blame is on the one guy who was supposed to be there. Well, he's fired now but the big question that needs to be raised is: was it his fault alone? How come there was only ONE person at a security checkpost in the first place? Maybe the system was to blame. The system of security that bids to give the contract to the least paying contractor, consequently these security guards who are supposed to guard the people entering the commercial planes end up being paid near minimum wage and mostly uneducated and some not even speaking english.

This act of terrorism has many domino effect. The domino that we need to be concerned is the fact that immigration is going to tighten it's grip on the illegal immigrants. Last night, Jay Leno joked that Blockbuster should look after Immigration Dept, since you know how they come after you if you're like 2 days late!.. Jokes aside, what this could mean is added difficulty for Nepalese who want to come to the US and/or stay here.

The US that used to boast freedom and action against discrimination based on Race, National origin, creed, now has to take their policies back and revert back to a discriminating nation that discriminates anyone who's not white or black or identifiably yello. Officially it's still the epitomy of freedom, but the citizens are showing the inherent tendency to discriminate. Well, in defense of some US citizens who still do not discriminate I have high respect for them. Because if I was an American I would discriminate too. People discriminate against indians all the time in nepal and vice versa so no complaints there, except for the fact that the US is treading on a thin line between being the land of the free and just another country in the world. That's what Bin Laden has done to the US.

Also, some days ago, I read a report somewhere about the situation of pilots in
USA. In many regional airlines the salary of a pilot is so low, that one of the pilots
in Continental Airlines was actually qualified for social welfare.

The first year salary of many airlines pilots are around US$13,000-15,000 a year.
The pilot given in the example had four children, so he qualified for welfare. Now,
just imagine how it feels like when the man who has tens, hundreds or even
thousands of lives in his hands is in such miserable condition!

George Bush suggested enabling the technology to allow people in the ground to take over the control of a plane in case some terrorists take over the plane. Pilot organizations have rejected this idea. Of course they will reject this idea. Who's gonna vote for the technology that's gonna make their jobs obsolete??

But, the government needs to rethink this idea. It's not a bad one and this will definitely deter any potential hijackers. What's the point of hijacking an plane that you can't control??

Biswo,
On the contrary, pilots' salaries are quite high compared to other occupations. For eg, the first year salary in Continental is at least $30,000/-. Check out this site for avg salaries of pilots - http://www.pilotswanted.com/newsletters/99-02.htm

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median salary for airline pilots in 1998 was a whopping $91,800.

So I guess there is no feeling sorry for these guys in this matter.

Thanks for the info. The report I read(about low salary of pilots) was in

http://www.tehelka.com/channels/currentaffairs/2001/sept/18/printable/ca091801letterpr.htm

So, I think may be there are some airlines that pay poorly to the fresh pilots.
