Don't Deep Shrestha's songs just sound great? Isn't his comeback to the Nepali music scene the best thing that has happened in the country since the invention of Gundruk? Aren't the lines just so painful to recite, but so full of pleasure when listened to? I think he should be an idol to all the, to borrow Wall Street Banker Arbin Sherchan's term, "romantically challenged" Nepali folks. Here's my favourite from his new album Dristi. Lyrics by Rajendra Thapa.

Jheer ma uninu euta kura
Peer ma uninu euta kura
Nabhijne aankha kasko chha ra
Tara jharnu najharnu arko kura.

Euti najik ki mitra lai sodheko yo verse ko artha bujhyau bhanera. "Yeah, different forms of expression" bhanin. Tara oonle artha bujhya bhaye, ma kina ajhai Virginia-baasi Tirtha Prasad Timsina bhanda pani pidit?

Deep Shrestha and Sophiya Gurung's performance last Saturday in Boston was steller to say the least, wasn't it? Although many of his songs were sentimental, there were merry ones too... finishing with the upbeat "basyo basyo, usita preet basyo"! The sentimental ones too were just so beautiful, I could listen to him all night!

There are at least four or five songs from Dip Shrestha that are definitely
awesome. Eventhough I am not a great fan of music, I can say that much. With
great respect to the singer, let me quote some of his beautiful songs:

"Jati Hasu Bhanchhu Aashu maa dubchha jivan..."
"Hu Yatri euta Kahaani Lekhne Jangali Paatamaa..."

As our national treasure, Deep Shresth was singing, Seizi Ozawa was conducting Brahms' First Piaono Concerto and Symphony Number 1 in Boston Symphony Hall in Massachusetts Ave.

I was waiting eagerly to hear Mr. Shrestha's voice -live, but turned out Mr. Ozawa was conducting Brahms the same night. Since it is Mr. Ozawa's last season (29th) with BSO (Boston symphony orchestra) I opted for Brahms. There is an interesting story behind this First Piano Concerto. It is undoubtedly a beautiful piece. Even I, a novice classical music lover, could tell that. YOu see, he came to see great shumann and fell in love with his wife. But luck would have it shumann had had a nervous breakdown, so his wife out of loyalty could not divorce him. So our love struck Brahms never got over that and wrote this stunning piece. When one hears the Second Movement you cannot fathom anybody could be so devastatingly sad .

Anyway after 3 curtain calls and a near-deafening standing ovation we left the Symphony Hall feeling exhilirated. Is Boston a world class city or what? Do I feel lucky to be associated with Boston? You bet!
