Samrat Upadhyay was last night named Giles Whiting Foundation awardee. The award given to young writers of exceptional talent and promise carries a purse of $35,000. The red-hot novelist Akhil Sharma is one of the 10 recepients of the 2001 Whiting. The recepients were announced at a ceremony in New York yesteday. Samrat was introduced as "born and raised in Nepal...he draws on his early experience in his debut collection of stories, Arresting God in Kathmandu...." A long applause followed. It was great to see Samrat getting acknowledged from who's who in American literature.

Thanks to former GBNC president who is now the president of GAA in Kathmandu, Mahendra Honda Shakya's initiatives, the alumni association of St. Xavier's School (aka GAA) -- assuming details get worked out soon -- expects to host a reception in honor of Samrat Upadhyay (Class of 1980) in Kathmandu later this year. Along with many of his classates, friends and supporters in Kathmandu, Samrat's old English teachers -- Fr. Donnelly and Fr. Watrin -- are mighty proud of his achievements. oohi ashu ktm, nepal
