I've always thought bioterrorism/terrorism also threatens Nepal. The following
article isn't reposted her to self-congratulate myself. It is posted here as another
reminder to our fellow compatriots how much threatened we really are.

[First Posted in January 16, 2001 in www.gbnc.org] Please enjoy. And please
don't be angry that it is posted here again. It is posted here because of relevancy.

Let's think about this scenario:

Mujahiddeen mercenaries from Saudee Arabia and Tajikistan embark
on a dangerous project in Siberia: to lure the underpaid security
personnel there ,and steal the viruses of smallpox, the disease
declared to be eradicated in 1977 and of which only samples
remaining are in Atlanta and Siberia lab of respective countries.

Though majority of personnels working there make sure that this
never happens, the mission of the mercenaries succeeds because
of one venal scientist who hands over the virus sample for a
handsome amount of American dollars. The virus sample is then
channeled to Afganistan, via porous Uzbek border, and the central
command under the notorious terrorist Osama accepts it blithely.

The mercenaries plan to take the sample to India:for which they
have three ways. One to smuggle through the volatile border of
Indopak, another through other countries except Nepal, and the
third, via Nepal. All routes are taken with equal importance, and
three groups are formed, one is sent to Pakistan, one is sent to
Kathmandu, and another is sent to Dhaka.

Two bearded young boys come to Nepal airport, with their eyes
shining with rage and their evil heart palpating with fear. They
know that the authority there will let them go unharmed for a
hefty payment, so they are still sanguine about safe entry.

But on the way, they already made a mistake.

The jar in which they carried the virus were not as hermetically
sealed as required, so the jars start leaking in Darbar Marga
where they are walking one day.Lots of people in nursing homes
and hospitals suddenly start complaining of the disease that new
trainees and young doctors there had never encountered before. The
oldest few remembers something, and contact their collegues in
Atlanta, Centre of Disease Control(?) and confirm the disease
to be smallpox.Shock to Nepal, where there is no storage of
vaccine and medicine for this disease.

Worse, no nation comes forward with help, because there are only
seventy millions of vaccines stacked in USA, and probably a few
millions more cumulatively in the rest of the world. Factories
long stopped making such vaccines, and syringes used for that.USA
too thinks that the vaccine will be useful for its own purpose
if some terrorist come to its land too.

Within two months, half of the citizens of Kathmandu are reported
to be suffering from the disease. The death toll is reported to
in more than ninety thousands.

If we keep our security lax in airport, such scenario is very
much likely. What will we do then?

I don't subscribe to the Indian claim that we are the smuggling
point for all their insurgencies. But,hey, let's think about that
(and this )also.
