Hi Sujan and all,

I have had a few interactions with Dr. Shyam Karki, former president of the Association of Nepalis in America, in the past, and I must say that I have
come away very impressed with him and his ideas for the betterment of
Nepali communities.

He has sent out this letter (see below) to all in his mailing list --sharing info and appealing for help. And this is PRECISELY what leaders of Nepali communities
can do and do very well. No one was and is asking them to perform miracles!!

Anyway, after reading Dr. Karki's letter, it does feel GOOD to be assured that when faced with challenges and uncertainties, SOME of those assuming
leadership of Nepali communities CAN and ARE able to take some decisive
actions while showing nonjudgmental concerns and compassion.

Hats off to Shyam Dai and to Sharda Thapa for keeping us INFORMED -- no matter how bad the news might be.

Below is a part of his letter:

Hi Friends,

Recent news about detention of Subash Gurung at the Chicago airport must have shocked everyone just like it shocked me. I was bewildered and after intiail shock wore off, I wanted to know more details.

Everyone in my office, everyone who knew I was from Nepal was calling me with the news and I did not know any more in the TV news. Incidentally, I had to travel to Chicago on Tuesday, November 6 and stayed with Sharda Thapa. It so happened that Sharda Thapa was working with Subash's brother to help
him and I requested him to do a write up on this case so that all of us would know more about it.

A few words about Sharda Thapa. Every Nepali in Chicago knows him as someone genuinely concerned about Nepali and always willing to help any Nepali in need. I had heard a lot about him before but this time I saw him in action. During my 6-8 hours time with him, he was on the phone more than 2-3 hours talking with Subash's brother, different agencies trying to find an attorney
and get things rolling to help Subash. I was very much impressed by his genuine desire to help a Nepali in need. I commend him for his spirit of community service. Not everyone is so much willing to be so helpful. His write up follows:

"On behalf of his brothers and the Nepali community in Chicago, I am sending an account of the extremely high

I appeal to everyone to help Sharda Thapa in this case. He can be contacted at
sjthapa@speedsite.com. During this time of heightened sense of insecurity, foreigners and en US citizens appearing as foreigners are vulnerable to intensive scrutiny and we need to help eath other.

We should not condone criminal conduct. Everyone is entitled to have a fair trial and if one does not have access to good attorneys and supportive documents, it can get pretty rough.

With best regards

Shyam Karki
