One way to make a difference is to get involved in politics. However, there is a drawback for enthusiast who do not wish to be a part of the parties already tained by scandals, corruption and other such bad images. In that case, what is the best option? Should one join an established party, run independently or attempt to establish a new party that can start with a fresh image, members and leaders? How feasible would such a strategy be?

I would like to paraphrase a saying I have been hearing very frequently. Most of the people who enter politics do so to change the country in a positive way, but end up being like other "tainted" figures. The cycle goes on........

How can the cycle be broken? When and where has it happened in the past, and how? Could someone with a background in history and political science enlighten us? Perhaps we could discuss what experiences of other countries may or may not be relevant to Nepal. One idea that I have found intrigueing: in Costa Rica and (at least in some parts of) Brazil, there is a law that if you are elected to office for a four year term you cannot run during the next election. The result: politicians do not spend time when they should be working campaigning (teach that to US politicians too!). And anyone who wants to get reelected better do good enough work to be remembered four years AFTER stepping down! There was one case of a mayor of the city of Curitiba who was reelected twice, serving three four year terms over the course of twenty years... and he probably did more for the development of his city than any other mayor I have ever heard of. He was even invited to New York to talk about/ demonstrate his locally developed system for an efficient bus-system that had the capacity of subways at one twentieth of the cost. (I wrote a little undergraduate paper about Curitiba a few years ago... if people think it is relevant to this thread and would like me to dig it up and post it let me know)
