Hi peoples,

Y'know the regular chapals (sandals) that we wear on our feet in Nepal, are they not called hawaii chapals?
I mean I know like airplanes are called hawai-jahaj meaning air-ship. But where does the hawaii in chapals come from? Chapals don't fly....well untill you get married that is. Then they come flying at you from the dear wife ;-) but that's beyond the point.
Any whoo one of my Hawaiian friends wanted to know...help would be appreciated.

A Happy Diwali and a Great Govardhan-Puja!

Not that I know this for a fact, but I think they’re called that cause those flip-flops are popular (or should I say almost standard issue for beach wear) in Hawaii. Some Nepali guy probably brought over the first pair to Nepal from Hawaii, therefore Hawaii chapels.

Again, like I said, this is just my opinion, I’ve got nothing to back it up with.

Happy Tihar!

Or may be because of its openness and "Hawa" flows through and over, hence the name Hawaii.
the beachwear probably from Hawaii is more likely explanation. Even the Bata chappals are called Hawaii right?

I'm sure all of you have heard of 'Nike Air' or 'Air Jordan' or even 'Airware'. And 'Air' in Nepalese is 'Hawa' i guess that is why they are called 'Hawai chappal'.

BATA is a Canadian company. I'm 99% sure.
And those chappals (blue straps on white base) were not referred to as Hawaiin Chappals.

Hawai Chappals refer to Chappals when you wear it feels like
you are in space, your feet feels so spongy that you can feel
like flying in air.

I am not sure whether those spongy Chappals are still available,
but, in the beginning of 1980s, they were cheap and famous.
Almost everyone who was wearing Chappals in '80 had that
chappal. As time passed the Chappal turned to Hiil Road like
chappals, after the spong was permanently squeezed and
in Monsoon they were so slippary, peoples have started to
switch to other Chappals.
