La Lectrice (1988) “The Reader”

Constance is a voracious reader. She decides to make her hobby into a career and advertises her services as a reader of literature. This new job allows her to meet many people. Eric, her first ‘client’ is paralysed. Another of her client, a hurried and harassed CEO.The life of Constance’s clients as well as her own become tangled with the stories she reads.

The film is interspersed with readings from well known literary sources as diverse as, amongst others, Baudelaire, Duras, Tolstoy, Lewis Carroll and de Sade.

Orleans, France. The Police Inspector Ferrot is attracted by Sylvia, the mistress of his boss Ganay. Ferrot and Sylvia have an affair and are found out. Ganay kills the young woman and charges Ferrot with the investigations. All the clues point at Ferrot who did not commit the crime. Luckily for him, Therese Ganay’s wife comes to his rescue.

An upper middle-class French family gather for a meal in the restaurant owned by one of the family members. The absence of one of the members triggers a lot of bitterness that brings to the surface all the hidden tension between the family members. Thus, in one evening and during one meal, family history, tensions, collective and separate grudges, delights, and memories clash and coalesce.

But one day, circumstances force him to turn into a machiavellian exterminating angel.
