I presume most of you know this but there might be many a simple Nepali who did not therefore, I am posting this for their benefit and as a reminder to others.

In some "western" countries, it has become customary for wives to keep their maiden names or else use both names. As a woman, I would be proud keeping the name that was given to me at birth while at the same time acquiring the name of my partner as well. It would signify my existence as both a daughter and a wife. It has also become prevalent for children of such partners to use BOTH the surnames. Therefore making it even more significant (in my POV) in this land of the melting pot syndrome.
There is no need to use this as a degrading comment. AND there is no hyphen between the two surnames.

Cheers

Its seems as your name suggest, you were one of those who was after a Suna-Kaharay, a Golden-Westerner that is, otherwise why would you come up with such a silly thing, you silly woman. Stop fooling around is what I gotta say to you.

Sunakhari,

Why so vague? To whom are you talking? By any chance, were you thinking of "Namita Kiran hyphen Thuene?" If not then forgive me. I think I have started seeing myself everywhere/every corner/every cyber line that there is and there ever will be. All of you are lurking in a dark corner to abuse me :). Help! I am need of serious help! Any therapist around? My shrink is away for a while.
sunakhari Posted on 19-Nov-01 09:41 AM

Hungry eye - take a hike!

NK, not vague at all. It was a general comment. No "pashupati ko darshan sidhra ko byapar" here.
BTW do you have a hyphen in between your names? ha!
NK Posted on 19-Nov-01 09:47 AM

My Dear Sunakhari,

I was trying to separate NK and Namita Kiran-Thuene. But seems like for some people even my name has become a fodder to spew garbage. Now I am awaiting for some individual accusing me of accusing him that I am calling him a bovine! Is there any respite among the dullards? [sigh]
observer Posted on 19-Nov-01 10:07 AM

NK ji..would u please use e-mails for these personal discussion of urs..? we are fed up with reading about u on this discussion ..

cheers
NK Posted on 19-Nov-01 10:15 AM

Observer ji,

Where did you see "personal" issue here as you have pointed out so politely? Are you on some payroll, here? I am asking this as politely as possible. WRiting with hepenated name and making that the central point of argument and repeating lest people don't know who NK is and who "Namita Kiran hypen Thuene is" very much a public debate. Besides, I am talking with Sunakhari, if you did not notice. Please feel free to interject, ignore or just plain abuse the thread. After all it is free for all. I am not saying, I am writing garbage here so feel free to ignore. **What I am saying is this is very much the heart of too many feminists agendas and very much the contenious issue of some misogynistic individulas.**

Let's debate this issue here if you have some free time.
_BP Posted on 19-Nov-01 10:20 AM

To Hungry Eye and Observer, I would suggest a Daxin-Kali hike. Please refer to previous topics for information on this wonderful hike. And as such, it will prevent you from unwillingly being forced to read the posts on this site.
Sunakhari Posted on 19-Nov-01 10:29 AM

Do you think it is a feminist approach or rather a civilized confident male attitude?
Methinks its the latter.
NK Posted on 19-Nov-01 10:32 AM

I see no differnt betwee a civilized confident male and a feminist. When u are talking about the uncivilized, insecure male than you are talking about Talibans and few individuals even in this site. Look how they reduce women to a complete asexual being. Their sex matters only to propage species. Otherwise they should remain faceless, nameless and simply *beingless.* A complete non-entity.
Nobody Posted on 19-Nov-01 11:18 AM

A simple non-entity rather!
A question: how does "hyphen" becaome and agenda of feminists and contenious issue of some misogynistic individuals? I'm lost.

Apart from what Sunakhari is suggesting about using both the names, my mother dropped her maiden name after marriage. And I saw no male domination in my family. And I've seen families where they have two last names and the females are "non-entities". It's a question of culture, not feminism. As far as feminism goes, it just helped the 'uncivilized' men exploit women further in the name of sexual freedom or bra-burners!

Again, aren't "Are you on some payroll, here?" and "dullards" uncalled for when we are blaming others for doing the same?
NK Posted on 19-Nov-01 11:21 AM

Apologies. Sorry about those two words. I hope you will forgive me Nobodyji.

And we don't read entire mail and just concentrate on the last line? Isn't Ashu accused of doing the same?
Irony definitely it is!
sunakhari Posted on 19-Nov-01 12:17 PM

NOBODY,
on the part about how feminism has helped "uncivilized" men exploit women. Could you please elaborate.
NK Posted on 19-Nov-01 12:51 PM

Nobodyji,

Because of the lack of time (i am wasting as we speak) I was more interested to go head on with Observerji. Because of the time factor I have made a pact to myself - I will chose to whom I want to debate with. I hope you will understand.
Nobody Posted on 19-Nov-01 01:07 PM

Sunakhariji,
Well it made these women feel they are fighting for something. And then sexual liberation etc as a means to demonstrate their rights. In the end, they were treated as objects. But, in their head, their act made sense- because they thought they had a choice to decide and do what they decide to do. Well "men" got what they wanted, except in a different guise. e.g. bra-burning may be a liberating act. But "men" got what he wanted, does he really care why there's no bra! And these women did the same thing they were fighting against. Because of this new, and false, perception of things. Of course lot of it focuses on sex. But that's how it all began, right? "We are equal beings, not just sex objects." Having said that, there are more important issues of equal opportunities, women in third world etc, but they take the back-seat most of the time... In fact, when feminists express their concerns where are the concerns of the women of third world? It's hip thing to be, that's all it is, for most feminists...
