Hi Krishna and others, You misunderstood my points. My quarrel re: Paras was with the smug members of the Nepali intelligentsia (particularly the Nepali Left) who rant and rave and scream the loudest AFTER things have already been decided -- pretty much once and for all. As was in Bush versus Gore in the US last year, one could argue and fight --even bitterly -- for one's candidate UP TO the point of just before FINAL decisions were made. But once the final decisions were made, the most honest thing to do for even ardent Gore supporters was to accept -- unhappily, regretfully -- those decisions as reality and MOVE ON to other issues. Unfair, perhaps; but that's how life goes. Ands you can't now say that Bush isn't the president of the US. He is, and that's that. In fact, the debate in the American public these days (after the recent newspaper reports) is NOT about Gore should have won as much as about HOW CAN WE MAKE THE ELECTORAL process better. What amazes me in Nepal is our Nepali intelligentsia's sheer INABILITY to accept reality even after things have already been decided. It's as if these intellectuals live in some la-la land where time runs on two parallel lanes! This sort of reality-denying attitude is what I am against. They had a chance to nail Paras last year. They had the support of 500,000-plus people. Moreover, they also had a chance to use Paras's case as an URGENT example to force the government to revamp our outdated hit-and-run laws. They failed on all counts, and, now, if they are honest, they should FIRST hold themselves responsible for making Paras Crown Prince. I argue that they blew their chances by running a half-hearted campaign that really went nowhere. Think about this: If these Leftist leaders, with such public support and anger, FAILED to have influence over the Palace and the bodies of the government then, what makes them or any of us think that they can have ANY influence over the Palace now? This is what I don't understand. Moreover, it's a big mistake to think that the King acts in the interest of the people. Well, he doesn't. He acts in his own interests, and he has made that abundantly clear. Why not accept that reality? Though unelected, he is as much a political player as any elected politician, and he seems to be using effective-for-himself strategies, PR and all that stuff to get his way. You can't blame the King for playing a better strategic game to get his way than our politicians. As for Paras, well, as much I resent his past and do NOT condone his past behaviours, I also know that NO human being remains the same . . . and, over the last year, this guy has : a) seen massive public anger against him for his heinous actions. b) become a father of a daughter. c) lost so many of his relatives in the bloodiest massacre ever. d) protected some of his cousins from Dipendra. Any ONE of those experiences could be a life-changing one for many of us. And Paras has been given more than his share of life-changing situations in tne last one year alone. Surely, some of the lessons must have stuck!! And so, short of leaving the country in disgust or joining the Maoists (and both of these options are UNPALATABLE to me!), I, for one -- reluctantly, regretfully and unhappily -- accept Paras the Crown Prince, and hope that he finds the courage and humility to formally request for forgiveness from the SOVEREIGN Nepali janata at some point soon, and learns to serve them all to the best of his ability. If he refuses to learn his life ko lessons, and goes on acting like laws did not matter, then, I have no doubts that the Nepali janata THEMSELVES -- without any prodding from these stupid Leftist leaders -- will assure his fall, swiftly and without a compromise. oohi ashu ktm, nepal
