As I understand, Kathmandu Post is the most popular and widely circulated english daily in town. Yet, it would not survive if not for subsidies it gets from its sister publication, the Kantipur, another daily in Nepali. What then attracts these english newspapers to come into this limited market, when they know that they are going to bleed there? What types of incentives are working here? I am also equally puzzled by a number of banks being added every year, when there is no where to invest and when other bank are getting floaded with deposits? -------- From Nepalnews.com ------- Himalayan Times hits the street Himalayan Times, Kathmandu's fourth English language daily newspaper, hit the news stands Friday. The newspaper is published by International Media Network Nepal Pvt. Ltd. with Ujwal Sharma as publisher. Ram Pradhan is editor; Pradhan was previously editor of the Rashtriya Samachar Samiti and the weekly Independent which has folded. The Rising Nepal, Kathmandu Post and Spacetime Daily are the city's three other English language newspapers. nepalnews.com br Nov.23

So the Independent is effectively dead! Boy, it was one of the best weekly in town that time, perhaps a decade ago. CK Lal did a smart move then, by switching into Nepali Times from Independent ! -U2

I saw two copies of the Himalayan Times, both that have come out two days after it was launched. The layout is pleasing for now as it's a change seeing a different paper with different look after a long time. It costs a mere 2 bucks compared to The Kathmandu Post and Space Time Today which both cost Rs. 4. However, the worst part of it was the news content, which is extrememly poor. In fact it's worse than Space Today...Reading a copy of The Himalayan Times for me was like reading a comic book with lot's of colorful pieces and nothing much serious at all. I wouldn't like to read The Himalayan Times when there are much serious issues going around in the country as it hardly touches such issues in detail. But I think that just might be their market stragedy - providing entertainment news for a mere price of local tabloids. Really, I wonder how much they can sustain with 2 bucks with so little advertisements.
