The Maoists are AGAINST personal freedoms. They want to tell you how you should live your life and what you should think. They are clear about what women in Nepal should wwar and should not wear. And they tolerate/accept and leave for room NO dissent and disagreements. It's useless to try to debate with them, to try to reason with them. Their world is viscerally divided into "with us or against us" types, and they hunt their ideological opponents only to kill them. Then they use such killings to justify their ideological purity. In this respect, they are like the Talibans, only that their religion is hard-core Maoism. The Maoists are AGAINST economic freedoms. They want to loot your wealth, your money and allegedly give it all to the poor. This Robin Hood approach may sound appealing to some (especially to many of Nepal's intellectually corrupt and morally bankrupt self-declared human rights activists such as Padma Ratna and so on) until we realize that the Maoist practice has been that they themselves keep the looted money for themselves, and use force, violence and extortion to amass further wealth for themselves. The Maoists are against free enterprise . . . against your freely opening up, say, a shop or doing anything else to take care of your own family. They want to tell you what you should be doing with your money and with your own time, and if you have different ideas, well, be prepared to face the two-barrel gun. The Maoists have no respect for democracy, no respect for plural voices, no respect for the process of working out solutions through talks and negotiations, and certainly no respect for the electoral process. They want their perfect world and they want it NOW. The Maoists are viscerally convinced that whatever they are doing, they are doing it right and doing it all for their beloved Nepali janta and for the greater glory of Nepal Aama. With so many policemen and even some army personnel dead only in the last 72 hours, what should be our -- ordinary Nepalis ko -- response? Let's look at the government too: 0) It has shown that it is NOW incapable of ensuring the basic freedom of mobility of most Nepalis within their own country. 1) It has shown to us all that a ragtag band of scrappy guerillas is better organized than the personnel of the Royal Nepal Army and the Police. 2) Its negotiating strategies are weak, khattam and jhoor and it is UNABLE to learn from its own mistakes. 3) It has no strong, decisive leadership that can take charge of the situation. 4) it seems unable to 'internationalize' the issue now so as to prepare room for international support/sympathy when it will have to use force against the Maoists. 5) It appears UNsympathetic and insensitive to the plight/distress of the police personnel. As far as it is concerned, Nepali policemen are TOY soldiers to be moved here and there, ONLY to be killed by the hiding enemy. 6) It is hobbled by internal jhagada and disagreements while poor soldiers and even poorer policemen CONTINUE to die senselessly to safeguard the freedoms of millions of Nepalis. 7) The government talks about curtailing civil liberties, but that misses the larger point. The Maoists have been doing what they have been doing NOT because they are MORE free than any of us, but that have been left totally UNACCOUNTABLE for their actions. The Maoists should be declared criminals and terrorists CLEARLY and without any flip-flopping on the issue. Once they are declared and seen as such, ONLY then, further thoughts are possible. Your comments, ideas welcome. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

The government waited till the last minute to take any actions against the Maoists. And what is more pathetic is, the government still is not convinced about when "the last minute" is. How many policemen, armies and civilians have to get killed like dogs for the government to take any actions against the criminals? Girija just watched helplessly when 40 policemen got blown up in one place and 70 others got abducted. Then came Deuba with “maoist problem” being his first priority. Nepali leaders should have long known that negotiation with criminals and terrorists like Maoists will never work. Maoists have nothing to lose. The greatest fear for anyone to lose would be life, and for Maoists “life” has not value, or else they wouldn’t go killing others so mercilessly. It has been almost seven years since Maoists became active in Nepal, and yet they have failed to make even a small political move. All they have done so far is creation of insecurity, fear, hatred amongst the Nepalese. How many people involved as Maoists know the real meaning of Maoism? Less than 1 percent. Maoism, communism don’t survive in today’s civilized, capitalized world. The biggest communist country, USSR failed; China is getting more and more liberal everyday; Maoists in China stopped their violence after finding out that they deeds were unacceptable in today’s civilized world. When are those idiot Maoists going to learn that?
