ADVANCED CELL TECHNOLOGY, the company that has cloned a human embryo, plans to formally announce the breakthrough this week, said the company’s president, Dr. Michael West.
An article on the research appears in this week’s U.S. News & World Report, and an account by the scientists themselves appears in Scientific American.
Arthur Caplan, director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, called the feat “a monumental moment in the history of cloning. The fact that someone has made a human embryo using cloning is a line that had not been crossed.”
The advance will not only stir up the ongoing scientific and ethical controversy over human cloning, he predicted, but also will “make some people worried that cloning of human beings is inevitable.”
The White House issued a statement saying that it was unalterably opposed to cloning embryos and that President Bush backed pending legislation that would outlaw the practice.
West made a distinction between reproductive cloning — that used to create new babies — and therapeutic cloning, the goal of his company’s research. In that process, scientists create embryos that are identical to people in order to obtain stem cells — the unprogrammed master cells found in early-stage embryos that can turn into nearly every cell type in the body.

First, when they cloned that sheep - dolly (?), the scientists were saying it would be many many years (maybe not in our life time)before they could clone a human. Then we heard they cloned rats, horse and recently, cows! Now they have cloned human embryo. They say it is only to grow a stem cell. But, first let me get this straight. Didn't they say the embyros died- all of them? Anyway, it would be only few years we will have an alive human. Only federal govt. is prohibited to fund, not the pvt. agencies.

Before talking about the succcess or failure of this adventure (endeavour?) I would definitely like to talk about, the ethical dilemma of this quest for some people and foolhardy for others. Why do people oppose it. why do *you* oppose it or if you support why do you *support" it?

My opposition comes from Scientists trying to show off. Yes, that is what I think. Look at us! We are capable of making humans! We are the ultimate in human race the cloning scientists. I oppose to the Genetically Modified food. Don't fool around with my food. what we are eating is what our fore fathers ate and before that what their forefathers ate. It has been tested and time and agin. And, here comes this GM food crying -take me, eat me, i am the science miracle! It has not even tested for 10 years and they want me to eat this Frankenstien food (as the europeans call it). On top of that they even REFUSE to label that this is GM food.
That is the kind of deception I can live without. And the funny thing about these labs/pvt.pharmaceutical companies is they say they want to eradicate the world hunger. Give me a freaking break!!!!!!!

Same thing with this cloning human thing. it is great if they want to save some human transplanting kidney or eye or whatever. How many people will benefit from it? Maybe we should die here and there. There are just too many people in this world anyway. I am not saying i am oppose to the science advancement to cure illness and so forth. but this to me is crossing the line. to clone human. yes, yes, i know it is just stem cell right now. but the day is not that far we will hear they have done the human too. maybe it has already happened somewhere in some corner. they are just keeping quiet, looking at this person from 10 meters away. maybe this person is 5 year old with beard with cancer growing on its face.

anyway, i will think about it and write more if i feel like it. _BP , i have not read the link you have provided. i will do that later too.

I think cloning is a good news.

I support the cloning. It is like providing new life to those who are suffering from
acute kidney problem, heart problem etc etc.

I also think medical researches should be given freedom. They will definitely lead us
to the new realm of prosperity and health. At least, we can hope so.
