Sorry for bringing up this petty question here especially when this forum is being used for discussing more serious issues... But then whereelse will I find ever helping fellow Nepalis :> Thanks!

This is what I got from my advisor, i hope it will b helpful for you. We have been informed that no visa appointments are currently being scheduled in US Consulates in Mexico or Canada for those who are not citizens of Mexico or Canada. If you already have an appointment scheduled, please confirm that appointment directly with the consulate. Also, at any US consulate worldwide, males between the ages of 16 and 45 from the countries below will be subject to a waiting period on non-immigrant visa applications that will add at least 20 working days to the visa application process. The countries affected are Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, and Yemen.

Thanks Bhaire for your prompt response. One more question: I am planning for a short trip to Nepal (about 2-3 weeks) and I will be applying for H-1 visa. How long does it take for Visa application process in Nepal? I am hoping someone in Nepal or someone who has an idea would help me. Thanks in advance!

Hi, If you are a student in good academic standing and if you can make your advisor werite a letter of verification verifying that you haven't violated any US law during your stay there, then yoiu will have no problems getting a new visa stamped on your passport in Kathmandu. Don't forget to bring your signed I-20 form. The US embassy here is very helpful when it comes down to returning studnets. This I know for sure. Trailokya

...and don't forget to get a new official transcript and include it with the supporting documentation as well. Usually helps to show that you have maintained good academic standing.

Oops, Trailokya and I did not catch that it was H-1. So, bring a long a most recent transcript if you studied in the US (preferably showing that you graduated)... and the paperwork for the H-1 visa.

Dear friends, Yes, i heard that non-immigration visa from Canada and Mexico has been suspended for third country citizen. I gave same message to one of my friend coz i had a appointment at Nov 26 and he went there to get visa. Finally he got F-1 multiple visa for 5 years. I would like to remind you one things he made appointment around the first week of this month but i don't know u can make appointment right now or not. Anyway better to consult with your international advisor and if you like to get all other information then log on to www.victorgarciainternational.com, e-mail or call him. He might have more information about that. Thanks and good luck to you.... Sagun

Trailokya, I just got back from nepal last week. It took me a week to get the H1B visa stamped in my passport. I dropped my passport, I 797A, a letter from my company stating that i am working, and a receipt from Nabil bank from Jamal to prove that I paid the visa application fee, on tuesday and went back the following tuesday to pick up my passport. no interviews, no hassle. Took me less than an hour to do all this thing. I suppose you can ask them to expedite the process if you need it within a week. hope this helps.

Thanks Chahalpahal! That helped a lot. I do have I 797A and I can get a letter from my company. But the "Change of Status" approval letter sent by INS says "You may file Form I-824, "Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petiotion" to request for notifying a consulate, port of entry or pre-flight inspection office of this approval". It looks like this is not mandatory. Any suggestions whether I need to worry about this?? Thanks again.

As an addition to my previous posting: From the INS website, I found that the form I-824 can be downloaded and the filing fee is $120. The question still remains: Should I or not?

I don't think you need to worry about all those. I don't even know what forms you are talking about. But I did have the application that the lawyers filed on my behalf with me as a backup.
