Even as the Prime Minister spoke, reports of intensified fighting poured in from Maoist strongholds in western Nepal, particularly the districts of Rolpa, Salyan and Dang, where the rebels made their first strike at an army garrison last week. Nobody would confirm it but there was speculation in informed Kathmandu circles all day that Krishna Bahadur Mahara, a former leftwing MP and chief Maoist negotiator with the government, had been killed in army action somewhere in his home district of Rolpa.

Government sources also said close to 100 Maoist cadres had been killed in operations overnight in the western districts. Again, there was no official confirmation. Along with reports of military successes, however, rumours about impending Maoist strikes too float about in the uncertain Kathmandu air: that they are preparing for another major strike at an RNA installation in the west, that they are planning ‘‘something big’’ in the capital, that they are quietly filtering across the border in India to regroup and strike back.
