US Government has no Hand in Ambassador Gautam's Recall

Kathmandu, Dec.1: The US government has not hand in the abrupt recall
of Royal Nepali Ambassador Damodar Gautam before the expiry of his
four-year term, a senior American diplomat said Friday.

" Absolutely not. It is the decision of the government of Nepal,"
visiting Assistant Under Secretary of State Karl Inderfurth said in reply
to a question at a news conference Friday.

He met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala for 45 minutes Friday
immediately after arriving on a three-day visit to Nepal as part of a
four nation South Asian tour that earlier took him to Sri Lanka and
India.

He visits Bhutan after Nepal.

Gautam is the seventh ambassador to be recalled from the United
states without completing his assignment.

One envoy was recalled by King Birendra after he was caught lifting a
book from a shop.

Others have been recalled either because a spouse could not adjust to
the western society, another incurred the wrath of Prime Minister Girija
Prasad Koirala, another sought reassignment to keep his wife company with
a UN job and two lost their jobs because of the changes of governments at
home.

One speculation says Niranjan Koirala, the nephew of Premier Koirala,
is tipped to replace Gautam.
