I am a little unhappy, Kantipur Publication is calling maoists terrorists- whenever i read it through- it kinda feels awkward. Its perfectly fine for the government to call them terrorists, but not the media. I wonder how others feel in this subject.

I guess one man's terrorist is another man's mujahedeen. Personally, for me a terrorist is someone who attacks non-combatant civilians - and I think the Maoists have killed several unarmed civilians and I have no issues with TKP etc calling them that.

Do the Maoists deserve to be treated with more respect in the media? I think that is upto the editors. TKP appear to be is a pretty centrist leaning newspaper and their perception of the Moaists seems to reflect the general opinion among centrist leaning people in Nepal that Moaists are terrorists since they are attacking civilians to pursue their goals. Are the centrists right on this issue? I guess that's up to each of us to decide!

DiG, you seem to think differently - I'd be interested to know why you are uncomfortable with the media calling them terrorists.

Regards and have a nice day!

Maoists had been terrorizing for quite a while according the government standards. The media (specially Kantipur Publication) had never termed them as "terrorists". Even if you read the headlines- they are mish-mashing when naming the maoists. So one can see their uncomfort in labeling them solely as "terrorist".

Well, my stronger point is- the media should not be judging the maoists as terrorists- the government in the past (and I am sure now too) has (is) done terrorizing activities to the public (maoists). The democratic struggle in 1990 was a "terrorist" activity in the eyes of the panchas. Maoists certainly have an agenda- and a serious backing by considerably large portion of Nepalese. We as individuals we have been terrorized by the maoists, or the government which has been terrorized by the maoists can term them as terrorists. But media should not line-up with anyone and start taking sides. That is not what journalism is about.

Do you know that the "Rueters" and "CNN" refused to use the term "terrorists" for the 9/11 criminals.

More than that, Kantipur had been acting very "nuetral" before the recent incidents- and now certainly taken sides.
