I have been hearing some distubring news from home. With a nationwide emergency, the media aren't allowed to report freely, a debatable point in itself. But my concern primarily is: How is the general mood since the army operation began? I get the impression that the government to date enjoys popular support in its use of force against Maoists? With all the mass media muzzled, how are people getting their news, if at all? Is it back to Panchayat? Someone wrote to me the other day, wild rumors are having a field day. I am not surprised. Ashu, you are on some kinda leave from the site? But you could treat this as an emergency, and break your silence :) I would love to hear from you. Anyone in Nepal, really, or for that matter anyone who has fresh news from home. What's going in haat-bazaar in N'gunj, Jhapa, Solu, Argakhanchi, Terhathum, Baglung....?

VVji: I have also read somewhere Midweek Post of TKP was confiscated from stores just because it had a half page picture of one Maoist militia. What's wrong with the government? I think this sweeping emergency shouldn't muzzle press freedom. It is very difficult to imagine that some of NC leaders won't misuse this for their personal gain.I think there are some inviolable rights of people enshrined in our constitution, and those rights shouldn't be suspended at any time. Also, news about RNA victories are yet to be verified by independent media. I am not sure why govt is afraid of independent media? Reading Kantipur or other papers these days looks like a throwback to Panchayat era. "Acc to defense ministry.." "Defense ministry also confirmed this report..." etc etc. Hell, yea. We don't want to read only the communiques of 'defense ministry'. What disturbs me is : what if some army majors overreach and kill innocent people somewhere? Can newspaper report that or not? I am not more afraid of Maoists. We may be able to defeat Maoists, but if we have to give more right to army, and yield our democratic rights in the aftermath, it would be no different from Maoists victory for us. I am for army. I am proud of all what they are doing. But for democracy's sake, they shouldn't be left unbridled. RNA should know that its glorious history shouldn't be stained with the lives of innocent people. And the government, and the army brass should make this clear , in no uncertain terms, that those army officers who behave badly with people will be brought to justice.

Namaste, I know some of you here are history buffs. What were the pros and cons of Indira Gandhi declaring Emergency? Is what's going on in Nepal similar to that? thanks, Shail

Buldoger, I dont understand what your problem is with people discussing politics. And I think it is obvious that ALL kinds of people and not just Bahuns discuss politics on this forum. It is a perverted sense of reality to think that it is only Nepali Bahuns living in America who post to this site. Doh, what world do you live in? If you have issues with either politics or Bahuns then you should try and explain clearly to the people on this forum what you feel and also why you feel the way you feel. I think this is a pretty open-minded forum and people will be willing to lend more than a sympathetic ear if you are able to introduce some rationale and sense into your postings. But I think you just made an ass out of yourself by vomitting hatred and prejudice which will neither persuade anyone nor serve any other purpose.
