Hi all, What follows below is a collection of informal news I have gathered -- in the course of past two weeks -- from my friends, contacts and acquaintances from various parts of Nepal. This is the best I can do, using my own network and judgment. I, as a Nepali citizen, fully suport the Nepal government's Emergency measures, though I wish we in Nepal could get this Emergency done and over with soon with sound democratic results that we all deserve. Our private sector, not to mention development efforts of all, is the most hard-hit. I wish the RNA Jawans all the best as they do the needful to root out the terrorists. Thanks to Village Voice for urging me to share news about Emergency here on gbnc.org A note: The "good", "bad" and "fair" are all RELATIVE, judgmental measures. Roughly, good security means: Life goes on as before Fair security = avoid travel to these places; need permission from the Chief District Officer or some haakim to do anything that involves a group. Bad security means, well, it's pretty much a war-zone. oohi ashu ktm, nepal ******************************** 1. Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur Army personnel out, roaming about from dusk to dawn– creating a mild war-like zone atmosphere. Few residents go out after 8 pm. Extensive checking of all vehicles at various locations after 8 pm Tourism industry (hotels, trekking, etc) hard-hit. Thamel is a lot less lively place these days. Other than that, I attended – in these Emergency times -- a few wedding receptions last week in Kathmandu. These rceptions were glitzy, lavish and, quite frankly, very distasteful. I suppose people are free to flaunt their wealth, but I expected somewhat subdued receptions and all that. . . but, no. 2. Surkhet Poor security situation Public mobility is severely limited 3.
