Ashu, I'ts been a long time since I left Nepal. Back then, our country was so much into these Star TV, Channel V, Zee T.V etc. Now I am curioius to know how the whole arena of Television in Nepal is currently. Especially about our own Nepali Television...are there any good news, entertainment programs, game shows etc.? Are there programs based on English only? The reason I am asking is I am aspiring to be in the Television arena in the future and would really like to know how things are going in that spectrum. So, if you could enlighten me with your opinions then I'd really appreciate it. Thank you

Hi Astha,

I personally don't watch TV all that much here, but -- thanks to Space Time Cable Network -- we do get HBO, Cinemax, Discovery, ESPN and all those channels here. We get German, French, Chinese and Korean languages ko satellite channels too. C-SPAN II -- discussing books and ideas -- is also beamed here.

Believe it or not, there ARE purely Nepal-bred male and female fans of shows like "Ally McBeal", "FRIENDS", "Baywatch" and so on. At times, I too have
watched a couple of "Seinfeld" reruns on some channel here. And at Red
Onion Bar in Lazimpat, I have overheard Nepali patrons vigorously discussing
their favorite "Survivor" person.

Still, what I have noticed is that privately-held programming studios have come up
in large numbers recently -- employing talented, and shall I say, good-looking,
Nepalis.

Channel Nepal -- Space Time's satellite wing that beams Nepali-language programs to the rest of Asia -- is also into making and beaming new programs (talk-shows, game-shows, music programs) and so on.

A good friend of mine S Sakya is the general manager of Space Time TV Network, and another friend S. Pathak is the president of the Nepal Cable TV Association. If you need specific info on this growing industry, please let me know.

asuji,
are there any jobs in nepal for biochemists....or bioinformatics or is it a stupid question to ask....
ashu Posted on 20-Dec-01 12:01 AM

Hi there,

I really don't know.

But the field of medical transcription seems to have taken off quite well in Nepal, employing literally hundreds of people in and out of Kathmandu.

Alok T at Unlimited Software MAY be in a position to offer you good
advice re: job prospects or maybe Jai RB at Mercantile.

Amar, if you are reading this, can you or someone from your firm give some
solid advice or refer to someone who knows more?

Which reminds me: San, why not start a "JOB Bank" section here on gbnc.org so that talented Nepalis can look for, advertize for JOBS in ANY FIELD anywhere in
the world?

with increasing number of genome sequences in database, I think bioinformatics is soon going to be a nice fiels to be in. Among the scientist who love to do science, I mean on the wet bench, generally frown upon these bioinformatics and are always skeptical on the findings based on some advanced blast searches. But if you see the recent trend, lots of privately funded as well as govt labs are coming up with sequences for different bugs, plants and animals. The human genome sequencing is no more a new news. Now with these thousands of genes of unknown function(ORFs), a great onus on scientists is to be able to attribute functions to them. You know how time consuming it is to express the protein from these genes and characterize them. So with this speed it would definitely take a long way before we can characterize all of these genes. This would not be an exaggeration if i said bioinformatics will definitely fill this vaccum. recently I was looking at job market and I found increasing number of vaccancies in this field.

If u would like to be in science and hate to work with micropipettes and reagents, wow this is the field.

Now lets get down to the business- what is the condition of bioinformatics in Nepal?
nothing in protein engineering and genome sequencing.Nothing. Nothing.

best of luck

Ashu and San, I think the job bank idea is great. But people might not want to post resumes for open consumption. Not sure how that could be worked out.

Job listings in Nepal would be great, too, although it could be a real bear to coordinate it! Anything coming up for writers in about a year? :-)

I have seen some job postings for Nepal on:

It's a great resource for those interested in non-profit/community work and there's a Nepali on staff!

for biochemists there are two lucrtive options.

1. there are many colleges which have bachelor and msaters program in biochemistry or related science like immunology, microbiolofy and biotech. If u have masters in biochem u can right away start teaching. Affiliation to a mediacl school , which we have plenty in Nepal, means a decent job with nice income.....if u have bachelors degree then u can start as a lab technician.

2. There are couple of biochem lab in kathmandu and they pretty much use anlyzer for clinical biochem. thats another way to start ur career.

this much i know.
