When some people say "I'm dating this person," they mean it's an exclusive relationship. Other people mean that they go out together sometimes, but it's not exclusive and I am sure there are many other definitions and tricky situations we have gotten into due to the differences. How do you guys define dating ? What do you mean when you say "I'm 'dating' this person "?

dear horizon,

when a guy says that he is dating "this person" that means he is letting that "person" make a fool out of himself or that he has nothing worthy of doing except seeing/dating that person or he has plans to sleep with that person.

My straightforward answer.

I think Trailokya hit the bullseye. He certainly is straightforward isn't he? :)

Dear Trailokya,
Dating is making a fool out of yourself and have nothing worthy of doing is a new one for me. To me dating is exploring unlimited possibilities and sleeping with the person is always a consideration. Yeah JDV, he is straightforward but his answer will never get us the bullseye.

Trailokya would certainly have to mask his real intentions if his sole intention is to hit the bullseye :)

On a more serious note, Horizon's right, dating IS exploring (unlimited or limited depending on the criteria you use to pick your dates) possibilities, unless of course you’re just fooling around before you settle down with the man/woman your parents handpick for you.

Yups agree with you Vivs, dating is like tasting (testing) samples from the buffet of options in the market.
But unfortunately it's not like choosing from a buffet of food, and there are many feelings and emotions involved.
One can't but think that rampant and indiscriminate dating is not only hurtful for people who date such people because of their lack of commitment but also hurtful to the person themself because they become hard hearted. For such people the person they are dating simply becomes a commodity and not a h-u-m-a-n-b-e-i-n-g with feelings, emotions, depth etc.
If they keep jumping, there are certain deeper emotions that never get triggered and they don't understand the full worth of a healthy long term relationship. Thus all their assessment of a relationship is based on external, superficial standards rather than the unchanging and internal (which is more satisfying, in my opinion).
