Today (Friday) ko Saptahik Bimarsha weekly newsletter has published a list of Nepalis (businesspeople as well as professionals) and business houses that have EVADED taxes. Check out today's Bimarsha ko Web site for a complete list, and -- ASSUMING that the list is correct -- please share your thoughts here. San maybe you can have that section scanned and put it up here as some kind of picture file for the benefit of those who do not have Nepali fonts installed on their computer. Just a thought. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

The list is mostly correct, but it lacks a whole lot. The other thing is that, this kind of list can just be pulled from rabbit's a... and it would still be correct. Its a well known fact that all business-houses small or big prepare 3 balance sheets- 1 to show the government, 1 for the bank and 1 to keep it for themselves. I remember it was a while back that, the government would put up a list of top 100 companies that paid the most taxes. Some of the big houses missing or at the bottom of the list were Chaudhary Groups and alike while smaller firms would round of the top 20-25. Amongst business community the ethical code is- You are good as long as you don't go beyond 2 numbari kaam (this includes evading tax, paying out government officers).

>San maybe you can have that section scanned >and put it up here as some kind of >picture file for the benefit of those who do >not have Nepali fonts installed on their >computer. Just a thought. If San could do that it'd be fantastic as I don't have the Nepali font either on my home PC or my work laptop (and not allowed to download it either). Going back to the list of businesses who evades taxes, maybe this is just the wake-up call they need. Our society being what it is, hopefully the publication of this list will shame these businesses into paying taxes. What of the individuals though? I used to work for the UNDP several years back and though I earned 5-6 times what an 'sachiu' (sp?) made, I'm ashamed to admit I never paid any taxes. I've no idea what UNDP does now but international organizations should make it mandatory for the employees to pay taxes. Better yet, just deduct the taxes from the wages and be done with. On a totally different line of thought, ever noticed how those Nepalis who studied and grew up in Nepal and later came to the West for higher education have better English (as in their vocabulary is much wider and they tend to use 'bombastic' words) than those of us who were born and brought up in the English-speaking world?? I'm not really sure if saying their vocabulary is much wider since I'm sure most of us do understand and are familiar with those 'bombastic' words but we seem to use it a lot less than the first group of Nepalis. Just an observation, not a critique of either parties.
