shoot! perhaps I should've asked for a translation while I was at it. It's going to take me hours to read this!! But thanks a lot for such a prompt turnaround time San.

How come so much difficulties ?
SM Sainju Posted on 28-Dec-01 03:20 PM

Gee, I found someone I know, sorta close (but not my immediate ones), on the list. I always wondered how he was able to afford a mercedes....

Blame it on the fact that I was born and raised outside Nepal. Not proud of it but never studied Nepali. The little I know I have to thank my mom for. She'd make my brothers and I practice our Nepali reading and writing every day until we were old enough to rebel and just not go home until dinner/bed time.

But hey, I can understand Roman Nepali, so if you find yourself at a loose end ... :)

Fair enough JDV.

Sainju,
Even I know and recognize a lot of the names from the list. I think it's not the people but because of a weaker governance that we have a longer list.
SM Sainju Posted on 28-Dec-01 05:55 PM

Horizon,

One of the names i found on the list is my relative. You know what I mean. Hmmm.... I was always a rebelion to many of my relatives for which they all hated me so much... Sad but true... :(

I hope they really do something about this, I mean the government should take strict actions against whoever is found guilty of tax evasion. This is such a shame. In my opinion, every working individual who earns money should pay tax in Nepal. Be it a school teacher or a federal employee or a farmer, a doctor, an accountant or a business person anyone who gets paid should pay tax. No wonder the government in Nepal is always poor and has to beg for aids and donations.

Shouldn't they clean it up from the top down? Only sometime back we had read in the newspapers that GP Koirala had not paid his taxes. There are plenty of houses rented to locals but most to foreigners for residence and office pursposes do not pay taxes. Start from the top first.

Well, the list has obvious flaws. There are no politicians--Govinida Raj Joshi, Khum Bdr Khadka, Bijaya Gachhedar--and some top-notch bureaucrats in the list.

But I would still say it's a bold beginning. Naming names, hope the list is well worked out, is a first step. Yes, I know some of the people named here very well. I hope the government will go on to bring out other lists now while making these culprits pay their dues.

Never mind if the government isn't always able to bring some of these people to book, quickly and decisively. At least the nation will go through a mass catharsis as we discuss, dissect and tear apart our neighbors, relatives, and other "honorable" fat-cats.
