How many of us know how many madrasas/churches are in Nepal? And what do they teach their students/members? Are the teachings/sermons of the madrasas/churches are purely religious or they encompass many more topics than religion? Is there any authority in Nepal that looks over the activities of all these religious institutions? Any institution that provokes fanaticism should be checked..regardless of religious affiliation. Also, those people and institutions should be checked who take advantage of the poorness, illiteracy and helplessness of people and push for conversion. I have seen, in Kathmandu, Butwal, Biratnagar, people who identify themselves as sukumbasi or homeless occupying public lands and making temporary shelters and slowly turning those shelters into a semi-"pakka" or sometimes even a pakka house with a small business and an antenna on rooftop. When there were few shelters administration didn't care enough and when there were too many the issue became a "political"one and more and more houses or shelters were sprung. I know for fact that neither all of them were sukumbasis nor all were Nepali. They are still there and growing (in Biratnagar I have seen that growing in an alarming rate). I read this story somewhere in an Indian paper many years ago: A was happily living with his wife in a decent neighborhood. One night, a cry for help woke A and B up. It was middle of the night. They went to their window and saw few gundas were dragging a woman. The woman was screaming for help and a man who was really beaten up was also crying for help and also trying to free the woman. Gundas took away the woman and left the man to die there in a bad shape. B looked at A's face and A said, "those couple must have done something bad to those gundas otherwise why would they choose only them?..We shouldn't get involved with these gundas..." They went to bed to continue their sleep. Few days later another woman cried for help. They (A&B) saw the same scene, B looked at A's face and A said, I don't understand why don't people learn..Now these people should have ignored these gundas...that's why I say we shouldn't try to get ourselves involved with these gundas". They shut the windows and went back to bed. Few days went by and one evening out of nowhere those gundas entered A&B's flat and grab B and started to drag her away with them. A ran for her defense only to beaten badly. A and b both were desperately crying for help but no one came to their aid. A screamed and screamed and screamed for help but on one came. They took his wife away...and A declared..."Ye hijadaune ke basti hai" (this neighborhood is full of eunuchs). The tension is growing in our neighbourhood...we should remain vigilant ...we should learn to be proactive...we must know what is going on inside our territory.
