Hi everybody!

Its been a long time since Himtel broke down. Do any of you have any idea on which is the best card to call Nepal since most of the cards are not working. I heard that Dhukuti cards and Call Nepal cards do work, is it true?

Anand Agrawala Posted on 12-Jan-02 07:14 PM

Dhukuti has recently stopped selling cards for Nepal. Call Nepal cards still don't work. The best card available is thru HIMTEL (ATT card - 16 mins for $9.50).
numb Posted on 12-Jan-02 10:36 PM

Hey bro, try 1-866-MYNEPAL, it's really good and cheaper, it offers more time too,
I use this card. it's simlar to HIMTEL, and it hasn't broken down yet, $10=35-45 minutes
Ikus Posted on 13-Jan-02 06:12 PM

I just bought an Yeti Connect card from Dhukuti.com and it connected perfectly. Very good sound. I think it's from AT&T. It's good that our Nepali business men are trying very hard to provide us with cheaper solution to call Nepal. No thanks to NTA and NTC!!
SK Posted on 13-Jan-02 10:18 PM

Thank you Ikus. I also bought one from Dhukuti.com and called Nepal just few minutes ago. It's a great card. Also wanted to confirm you that it's AT&T line. I called Jhapa, no problem at all. It's little expensive but excellent quality.

I agree with you that our Nepali Enterprenuers are working hard. Let's support them.

Sagun, in order to buy from SAMs club, don't you have to be member? You have to pay membership fee of $35 before you buy anything. Isn't that right?

And also they'll ship the physical, you don't instant pin# like from Dhukuti.com or Himtel. I guess it really depends when you need the card.

If you immediately need the card for example at midnight, I prefer to buy online.

Thanks for the info.

Sagun Posted on 15-Jan-02 02:04 AM

SK,
Yes u do need membeship to buy calling card from Sam's Club but it's 45 cent per minute to call Nepal. Once you buy that card you don't have to go online, you can recharge same card by calling 800 #. You can call at 800 anytime it means midnight too. If u don't have membership u can tell your friends to buy calling card for u. Anyway to get something u have to do deserve something am i right? Then u can save 12 cent per miunte.......anyway thank you so much for your time and reply

Sagun

Guys,

Its time to boycot HIMTEL, TEL NEPAL and some of these other cards that haven't worked for over a month. It seems that they take their customers for granted! While I am happy that Nepalis are running these businesses, I think it is pathetic that they have no coonsideration for their customers.

It's understandable if the card doesn't work for a few hours or maybe a day becacause of some negotiations or technicalities. Hoowever, if it takes them months to fix it, that simply means they don't really care about their customers

SO, LETS START BOYCOTTING THEM.

boycott, if you can provide us extremely reliable and comparatively cheaper cards, we could boycott those cards. apparently, we have not been able to find cards that meet those criteria. Most of the messages above seem to be posted by other phone card companies and they were hiding crucial information. Though Himtel card is much expensive now, I do trust them. If others are providing the same card /same service at the cheaper rate, then Himtel should also lower the price or risk losing valuable costumers.
sucks Posted on 15-Jan-02 06:31 PM

Even if Himtel is the cheapest, they have shown disregard to us callers. I would rather pay a little bit more to some other company than to one that seems so inconsiderate.

Public has the final say and we have to be bold and make sacrifices to get a better service in the future.

Hi,

Just rcvd news from nepal. Himtel used to be a king of calling card on past. Whole reason behind this, was General manager of Nepal Telecom.
After some changes inmanagement at Nepal Telecom Himtel lost their lines in nepal. before that Himtel has reliable service in Nepal, No one try to interrupt their service. But all technecians and management people are aware with Himtel using Power and Nepal telecome lines for personal business. Himtel made thousands of $$ over past years and Nepal Telecome lost thousands of $$ in revenue. But you know it's nepal, If you have your own man in power no one can stop you.

This is the story behind cheap calling cards.

If any one knows who was GM of Nepal Telecom please post.

nepali kancho
CallWaiting Posted on 16-Jan-02 09:18 PM

NO MORE CHEAP PHONE CALLS.

Not sure how true nepali kancho's statement is...but I also heard that Nepal Telcom is closing down all lines that is not generating revenue for them. It's not only Himtel. It is everyone. These calling cards are saying their network is down. That is not true.
JC Posted on 16-Jan-02 10:04 PM

The best and the cheapest way to communicate with your loved ones is ask them to call you. A $10 infotalk card will last 15-16 hours worth of calls to the USA. If they do not have interent at their home, ask them to call from the numrous COMMUNICATION CENTERS everywhere in Nepal. The cost, less than Rs. 5 per minute.

Most of these people above are the same people trying to promote Dhukuti.com or TelNepal, its easy to fake the ID's, yes even the id numbers that is assigned by sajha.com, all you gotta do is delete your cookies associated with sajha.com or gbnc.org.

Now you pathetic advertizers, get a hold of yourself. If its too good to be true, it ain't true, we all knwo that. As Al Bundy would say to Peggy, 'Shut your pie-hole'.
Hemendra Bohra Posted on 17-Jan-02 12:40 AM

Dear All,

I don't understand why "Nepali Kancho" and others are intent on discrediting Himtel.

There are reasons why our service was reliable and good quality. Hopefully my explanations below will clarify that.

Himtel is US company with license from FCC.

Himtel did not have any direct lines to Nepal.

Himtel gets its service -- prepaid gateway, database hosting, switching and interconnection with other carriers through a US telecom company.

We specify them our criteria -- price range, ASR (Answer Seizure Rate) and Average Call Length. Higher ASR and Average Call Length indicate good quality connections.

Taking our criteria into consideration, our provider did Least Cost Routing (they obviously have to maximize their profit).

It is true that most of our calls did go through VoIP as the price range we specified was much lower than what NTC offered to any carriers. This was actually true of all the carriers, including AT&T, MCI, Sprint, NTT, BT, SingTel...

However, because of the Least Cost Routing feature, our calls could go through any of the providers in Nepal. Himtel's US-based provider could not and still does not reveal us the names of the providers in Nepal.

We aggressively monitored the ASR and Average Call Length of our calls, and requested our provider to change routes whenever the quality deteriorated.

I have been in Nepal since August 2001, and I know what has been happening at this end. Basically, NTC started to disconnect phone lines of VoIP providers in Nepal. There were at least 15 VoIP providers in Nepal, terminating calls from all over the world.

NTC could have disconnected the lines a long time ago. NTC lost a big chunk of its revenue, and people in Nepal blamed NTC for low quality of overseas calls. NTC decided to aggressively disconnect lines of VoIP providers only because of immense pressure from NTC Karmachari Union.

NTC management knows that VoIP is here to stay. Even if they can stop incoming calls, outgoing calls through services like "Infotalk", "IPStar", "Net2Phone" will continue to erode their revenue source.

Indian regulators are considering allowing VoIP from April 2002. Hopefully, NTA (Nepal Telecommunications Authority) will legalize VoIP in Nepal and bring it under the government revenue stream. Then providers in Nepal, including NTC can use VoIP to provider cheap international call services. We now know that with good equipment, satellite bandwidth and monitoring, cheap and good quality calls ARE possible with VoIP.

If (actually, When) NTA provides licenses for VoIP in Nepal, it has to somehow stop the illegal operators, and more importantly, make sure that the providers have the infrastructure to provide good quality calls.

Thanks.

Bhaskar Tripathy Posted on 17-Jan-02 03:57 PM

Thank you Hemendra Ji for clarifying the whole situation with the Prepaid Phone Card problems. The only thing I want to add is that, Voice Over IP was never illegal in Nepal. I don't think there is a law in the books in Nepal that states Voice Over IP is illegal ... I could be wrong. I think it is just the case of technology being a few steps ahead of the government bureaucracy.

I am, as you are sure, that NTC will be able to reconcile the need to get revenue and allow the Nepalis around the world to call Nepal at an affordable rate. I am looking forward to the day when Himtel cards will once again be available so that we can start offering them to our customers at dhukuti.com.

Thanks!

Hi everybody!
I think things will never be the same again. Calling never for 15-25cents /min will not be possible again. But what most of us have forgotten the service provided by Himtel over the period. Though now they are not able to provide the service we should appreciate the fact that they did what they could. Instead of renouncing Himtel, we should encourage it to resume its service. For quality service, we are ready to pay a bit higher than the previous charge.

This is to all the people complaining and accusing Himtel of cheating fellow Nepalis. I’ve been trying to call Kathmandu through my ATT long distance carrier for the last couple of days and have yet to get through. I think it’s high time you all realized that Himtel is doing us a favor by providing cheap calling cards and what’s happening in NTC is beyond their control.

Dear Nepali site saheb,

After having all this discussion for more than a month, and lots of people lost their money and couldn't get the service, who do you think will try your cheap card.

By now everybody know that only AT&T provided phone line goes thru to Nepal. I know you're trying to sell your product, but it's not a good way to sell the card with bad connection.

We know that your card even in good days was not good connection. Better find some good card to sell.

Hemendra...

I don' t think you r getting the point. As a customer we have full right to voice our concern. Until now, u still don't have any information updated on your site about what's happened? What your customers should do? As a business operator it is your responsibility to share with us what went wrong. So I am very dissapointed in how your company is handing this situation.

As your customer, I would prefer to use your card regardless of mushooming card companies. But I think you are taking your customers for granted by not informing your customers through proper channels. I did not know about the situation until I read your posting on this site today. I have $40 just sitting on the card I purchased with no idea on what to do.

You know if I were you I would have put a mesg board only for your customers on how they feel about the loss of this service.

rerettably one disappointed customer.

Hey guys
I have found one site through thamel.com. Its called nepalisite.com.
I saw their banner there and they are offering 48c/min. I even called himtel and dhukuti, and their price is higher than Nepalisite.com. The cards are the same.
I even bought a card yesterday and called--was perfect.
So would you go for high or low price if the card is same---
Just wanted to share instead of a fuss.
