I'm a junior at the moment and am thinking of stuff to do over the summer. With the economy in such a bad shape, there is no way i can find a good internship outside (in the business world). And I don't feel like staying on campus and doing data entry(read: research assistant) for profs. So I'm feeling like going back home to do some work(unpaid). Some social work, because I feel disconnected from Nepal after living away. I have no lofty goals of developing nepal, but just want to do something interesting/fun/worthwhile work.

Any suggestions from people who have spent summers in Nepal or are currently in Nepal?

Hi Nomad,

Contact Prakriti KC at Fulbright Nepal ko office in Gyaneswor, Kathmandu.

She is the head of this just-started unit that tries to place studying-in-America Nepali students as (summer) interns or employees at various
private-sector Nepali firms.

I'll also ask her to visit this site and share more info and answer questions. No promises, but let' see how that goes.

Check out:

Other than that, like in the US, networking is essential for anyone to land a
decent (summer) job. But Prakriti can be a good source of info and job-related resource.

I second you on that brother. About time people started appreciating the effort people like Mr. Ashutosh are putting into helping out the "community".

Although I don't know the dude personally, just by reading his posts here on this board for the last year or so I have known him to be a very resourceful person and I wouldn't have any reservation whatsoever in seeking him out if I needed his help sometime down the line.

And I think that's great. Being able to leverage contacts you make in these communal message boards- simply wonderful.

Regarding Summer jobs/internship, this summer I am planning to do internship too. My field is Computer Engineering with Signal processing concentration.I am junior too. Yes I went to career service office and did needful to augment my chances to get internship(paid if possible). But the thing is my GPA is so dismal I am totally pessimistic about the prospect. I know in Nepal, nepotism and favoritism are rampant but here in USA too, I don't think they are rare. Here they call it ' networking' :-) . Anyway, any dai or didi who is woking somewhere and if they could do little pushing and talking for this poor Nepali bhai...I would be eternally grateful... ...

Hi Brook and Sagun,

I appreciate your good words.
Thank you.

Sure, feel free to contact me whenever you think I may be of help to you. Even if I can't be of any help, I'll probably be tell you about others who can be of help
to you, or that they'll, in turn, know of others who can be of further help to you, and on and on.

Since the size of the "success pie", so to speak, is NOT fixed and limited in Nepal and elsewhere, we can all -- sajha.com folks -- slowly but surely help one
another succeed in all our personal and professional ventures in and out of
Nepal.

Yes, let's certainly leverage the useful contacts we make here on sajha.com

Thanks, ashu, for the link and your support.

Durcheruwa, I have heard of at least one US-educated computer professional who was working for Mercantile during his short visit to Nepal. I think he had graduated but I'm not sure how long he was working or what he was doing. But since Mercantile's CEO Sanjib Rajbhandari studied in the US too, he might be open to the idea of having summer interns.

Those who are interested in exploring employment opportunites in Nepal could visit Job ConneXion site at www.fulbrightnepal.org.np

or could send an email to me Prakriti KC.

As ashutosh had replied to some of the quries in your website, USEF/Nepal is trying to assist US-educated Nepalis to get connected to various employment sectors in Nepal. This could be for anyone intern/full time job seekers anyone! What you could do is post your CVs to this web site and then send email to me stating when you would want to come to Nepal and what sort of job opportunities you would like to consider. I will contact to concerned employers here and will get back to you.
