There is a talk going on about a possible buy out of RedHat by AOL Time Warner. Would this be a knock out punch to Microsoft's monopoly in software industry or just a jab?

Linux is not an easy OS when it comes to simple users who use computers for merely word processing, and connecting to the internet. But things appear to change rather rapidly in this dimension. KDE (3.0 Beta) and GNOME's (2.0) latest versions of their Window managers and most of all, software vendors'adoption of linux as a separate platform have given linux a viable alternative to Microsoft's Windows OS. Installation is fairly simple these days. You can buy a linux for dummies and do it yourself. Ton's of software packages are available for free (GNU, SUN, IBM, etc). I have personally seen small companies adopting Linux as their Desktop OS already. Steve Balmers and the company are trying their level best to stop open source but this time I do not think they will succeed.

What are your thoughts?

Yes i wish the deal or meger ( or whatever it is termed) goes smoothly between AOL and RED HAT. This will definately bring gleeful smile on people like us who love to hate MS for it's monopolistic approach to everything everywhere.

Eventually, All the OS will be a tool to get to the NET. Either use MS Windows, SUN Solaris, Linux, Apple etc.

Once you are connected all application like word processor, spreadsheet, DB application, etc will be web based. Web portal application will be the one to survive in the future computer market. What do you think ?

Well, I would'nt be so happy if I were you. AOL is just another Misrosoft waiting to happen. plus their services don't exactly bring me any joy. They create software that dumb people. Tryo talking to an AOL user in depth and see that AOL has done to them. I feel sorry for AOL users.
