For a Good Project in Nepal. Actually there are numerous projects. 1. Ski Resort in Dolpa, Cable cars, Hotel, Landscaping etc. etc. 2. Hydroelectric Project in Upper Indrawati. 3. Theme Park in Lekhnath, the muncipality is ready to offer 3000 Ropani of land for the purpose. Lekhnath is a small town with Begnastal near Pokhara. 4. Another project is for Large-Scale Hi-Tech Farming-- Over 15000 Bighaa fertile land is available in the Terai. Any Pointers on How to find American/European Investors? These projects are dead serious projects, I can show my credentials, the plans and the whole nine-yards.

Taat, these ideas sound wonderful. Let me finish my school and work couple years and wish me good luck. Who knows if with sheer power of luck ( and hard work also), if I turn out to be millionaire or billionaire, then definately I would invest some money on these pet projects....ehehehehe... akash ko faal ankha tari maar...or chora paunu kaile kaile voto seune ahile..vaneko jastai vayo hagi??????

It will be too late. These projects are really feasible and provide return on Investment within 5-6 years. There must be people with money lying on the sidelines waiting for the stock-market or something. If few hundred or few thousand of Nepalese in American can create a certain kind of fund for these projects, it would be very benefitial. Anyone has thought about that? Lets say we have 10,000 Nepalese investing 1,000 each- that's 10 million dollars right there.

Hi there, If I were you, I'd FIRST spend a lot of time and efforts writing a business plan -- thinking through every aspect of the proposed business and having a back-up plan in case things go wrong. This is so because without a well thought-out business plan, most US-based investors would not be interested in your ideas, no matter how good your ideas are!! And yeah, find Nepalis or friends who work or who have contacts in venture capital firms. To find out what (US) investors would look for, may I recommend these two resources that I have found very useful? a) a book called: "Business Plans that win $$$: Lessons from the MIT Enterprise Forum" by Stanley Rich and David Gumpert. b) an article called: "How to write a great business plan" by William A. Shalman in the Harvard Business Review, July-August 1997, pages 98-108. An excellent article!! Best wishes. oohi ashu whose job, by the way, is to work with Nepali private-sector entrepreneurs --ranging from Jyoti Group to recent fresh MBAs in Nepal -- and help them turn their business ideas into profitable, money-making products by using hard-nosed business reasoning and strategies.

Thanks a lot Ashu, I suspected you would be the one to come up with some good suggestions. Just to let you know, these plans I have are not just mere IDEAS, I have them on paper as Project Studies with detailed cost calculations and more. On some of the projects, we have already put some initial investment, but to come up with millions of dollars by ourselves is way beyond our limits. We did have some interested parties on at least one project, who backed out after the Emergency. These people had come to us. People don't really realize how much problem we have had due to the Maoist insurgency. We see what we have lost that was there, but don't see what we lost what could have been there. Well, I would be keenly interested to know in more detail about your work. What and how you are helping these people. Are you doing this freelance or through something else? I will look into those books and paper. Thanks again for your help.

>We did have some interested parties on at >least one project, who backed out after the >Emergency. These people had come to us. >People don't really realize how much problem >we have had due to the Maoist insurgency. >We see what we have lost that was there, but >don't see what we lost what could have been >there. Yes. With the exception those who are in the security business and those who get defense-related contracts in Kathmandu, this Emergency has been a big setback for most private-sector businesses in Nepal. You and I both know that most foreign investors would FIRST look for larger political stability in Nepal. If the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit, for one, carries a profile of Nepal with words like "Maoist-related violence", "Emergency", and so on, then attracting foreign investors would prove to be damn difficult. On another note, and this may be a stupid question, but have you approached Mr. Mittal at the International Finance Corporation (IFC)'s branch in Kathmandu? IFC-World Bank helped Soaltee Group put together their financing of that Bhotay Koshi Hydro Power. On another note, I'm intrigued as to what your numbers are for Upper Indrawati. >Well, I would be keenly interested to know >in more detail about your work. What and >how you are helping these people. Are you >doing this freelance or through something >else? Well, it's a full-time, paid job with colleagues who are smarter than I am, and who let me keep my own hours. As such, job is proving to be a first-class business education about/in Nepal. It's just that whenever I get bored analyzing too many Excel spreadsheets, or reading yet another tedious Ministry of Finance report, I come to this site to blow off steam :-) If you are in Kathmandu, we could meet and do guff-suff about all this. Send me an email. For now, however, let me just express general interest in your ideas without promising anything. > Thanks again for your help. Sure, anytime. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Good to see that some Nepalese have started to think big in a practical way. Also like the idea of $1,000/individual investment. I support furthering this plan and am willing to invest my share. Now you need to convince 9,999 more Nepalese.

I was out skiing/snowboarding during the weekend with friends and the whole time I was thinking how grand it would be if we could have this type of facility in Nepal. Because of the obvious reasons so many people ask me about skiing facilities in Nepal. If it was reasonably priced I think that it would be a very big hit for locals and foreigners. I think it would be a very lucrative invesment.

first of all kudos to all the participants. Its very inspirational to see intelligent discussions related to Nepalese commerce. author where r you based out of? what are your credentials? As ashu had mentioned do you have any concrete business plans or this is an idea you are just floating around for a response? I am certainly no investor but may be I can throw some ideas... given the present circumstances, it would be tough for any investor to invest large sums of $$ in Nepal. However, it is not end of the world. If I were you, I would consider following points on your research. 1. Focus on one single project that requires the minimum investment. 2. The industry has to cater to domestic population so that it is self sustaining. 3. Analysis of socio-economic benefits. 4. Impmentation of technology and its benefits. 5. start a site with project ideas and room for brainstorming. I have been personally interested in establishing just a business forum on the net to bring in ideas for micro and macro enterprise solutions for nepal so if any of you are interested in contributing and starting up a forum let me know. Ashu, you seem like a person with a solid understanding of domestic economic infrastructures. I would be interested to hear your comments. 6. Financing: areas to focus for financing. In the last 2 years there has been billions of dollars allocated to UNDP and other Non profits for self sustaining economic development projects in developing countries. If you have a business model that can incorporated technology for self sustaining developmental projects, non profits would be more ideal at this point for your financing. 2nd option:- long term but doesn't hurt starting the foundation now! I call it expatriate commerce. Expatriates can be major potential investors if you have an operation that truly makes sense and can generate profits. I think they can really pump $$ to the economy. With recent changes in goverment policies in Nepal for expatriates, I am even more hopeful about its future. If you are intersted we can have a whole different discussion on that. These are just some random ideas. If you have time browse undp.org, http://cyber.law.harvard.edu, http://www.markle.org/index.stm and some case studies at HP's http://www.hp.com/e-inclusion BJK USA, Thamel.com

Thanks for starting an interesting thread. I have the reverse problem, in a sense, because I know someone who wants to pour money into infrastructure projects in Nepal but has serious reservations due to the stories he or she hears about Maobadi, corruption, and so forth. Lately, I've been pondering what indicators will herald a return of foreign investment in Nepal. My gut instinct tells me to look at which foreigners were first in and last out, so to speak. So, I feel that my totally subjective angle is to wait until the INGOs (such as UMN) start going back in (not that they ever left); after that, I reckon for-profit foreigners will follow. Just a thought. Krishna

Ashu, I will be back in Kathmandu in a couple of months. We will sure have some guff-suff then. I just registered to sajha.com, so you will have my e-mail as well. BJK, well you know who I am and actually I had discussed with you about a couple of projects before. One of them actually has gone ahead, hope to see the results in 3-6 months time. Krishna: I think I know who you are as well, but its good to be discussing these issues here. I am just hoping maybe some of us trusted people could get expatriates to fund some of the projects. The projects of course will have to be defined and looked at all the angles by all of us. Lets prepare ourselves for the long run, and we will do great. I am sure about that.

The Maoist Insurgency is new to us, new in the sense that we haven't learned to tackle with it in our every day lives. We are in the learning phase of how to handle the problems. If you look at India, Columbia, Peru, Sri Lanka and few other countries where there are terrorists who have created havoc, yet these countries still have provided ample opportunity for foreign investment. No doubt its a bad publicity for us right now, but it is foolish to say opportunity does not exist. Business is a game of risk. If you look at the history, a lot of business houses really made it to the next level by investing during tough times. We did have some backouts as I mentioned before, but again we are still working on it convince them. One of our projects actually is at the final stage, the results yet to be seen so I am not in position to brag about it yet. I will let you know or you will find out in half-a-years time. Foreign Investment in tourism might be a bad choice right now, I totally agree, but some of the other projects could bring investors into Nepal still.

Hi Taat, An idea for doing some solid homework: There is this group in Kathmandu called: Foreign Investors of Nepal or FIN. Its members include foreigners who have invested their own money in hotels, resorts, hydro power and so on.The group includes some straight-talking Americans too. To start off, some of the FIN members would be a good source to find out, over coffee or dinner, the CURRENT general state of foreign investment in Nepal. Since they are already here (for years, in some cases) with their own money and know the investment scenario quite well, it's really vital to network with them, and get the inside dope, so to speak. When talking with these people, you or your team's credentials would be extremely important. To answer to the other person: Yes, the news and violence surrounding the Maoist insurgency is a big obstacle for foreign investment. NOBODY is denying that reality here. But the fact does remain that Nepal has SO MUCH UNTAPPED POTENTIAL to be a much richer, much better, much more developed country WITHIN OUR GENERATION, within the next 20 years or so that it would be a shame NOT to start thinking seriously and strategically about developing businesses that provide jobs and make money in Nepal. Sure, some of the ideas may take years to come to fruition. Some of the ideas may never come to anything. There WILL be hundreds of obstacles to overcome, and so on and. But that's life. You can't be an driven, focussed and result-oriented entrepreneur (the type Nepal needs more of) if you are cynical of/dismissive of every potentially good effort. So, first: let all kinds of business ideas come to the fore. Only then, one can start evaluating which ones are promising and why, and which ones are not and why, and so on. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Top 10business plan I ever had in my mind (some of them given by my own friends). 1. The plan in 1988: We were in a hut like lodge near race course, New Delhi. That was so fablous, our friends who were all returning fresh after graduating from an Indian Univ. now one of the many IITs. In Pokhara, we could make a cluster of such huts, probably Kharle chayeka. Most feasible places: Chhinedanda near Bhir. b. South of Dhunga sanghu c. Seti-Pardi ko dovan (well, Diabolic knows this place better than me). d. Kaski Kot. This still works, if you can spend about ek crore rupiya. 2. A Big billboard. The Idea I got from Hollywood. The hollywood was posted in current hollywood by one Real estate agent in 1920s(?) which has very big characters. Similarly, why not we build one Big Board in Kahu ko danda and in night we use lightening system, as an advertisig board. The land is cheap. Make is biggest in the world. Big enough to be caught by CNN's satelite TV about 700km above earth surface. Direct Advertisement .............(crazy idea, though). But, I surely wanted to invest for which I also got some other investors, (reducing the size of the board, applicable only for Mahendra Pool area , Paardi and West of Seti in Pokhara NP). We were about to embark for land purchase in Kahu ko danda, my father said, Kahu being one of the most active Maoist area the CM board will be trashed in a month of its errection. Its file is now under dustcover. 3. www.Lilam.com : When dot.com biz was on peak and I was thinking of going back to Nepal, well, I had a plan of running electronic auction site, inspired by EBay.com. Well, the Lilam.com itself is not going to sell on 0rupees in another Nepali Auction Board. So, this plant got down to drain. 4. www.ePasal.com : Luckily it was passed to new owner, and I hope it will come to reality. 5. Hahoo (News) Network! Not sure. Sometime, I think of joining Radio Nepal or NTV if they announce for some News castor Position, provided I get the appointment? Thats just a dream. So, to make my dream come true, thinking of running a HahooTV, so by entertaining peoples, I can be billionnaire. Not sure when? (the type of programs are still in my mind and will surely go if I get time to make them). So, confidential. 6. Opening a RATRI tech. college, targetted on those who work in day time and want to study technical/ engineering in night. A plan was posted in http://groups.yahoo.com/group/e-Nepal/ If you wish you can see it there. If you are interested you may start, or even make me a partner. I can offer upto 10,000dollars + my experience. No kidding. There are already 26engineering colleges, but, not a single one that targets night session. Like KTM univ. which was run in Public college enjoying public property, and finally, grown up as univ. we can have a deal with other colleges for night sifts, for sometime, before we have enough resources. The idea of nighte college is to minimize the entrance fees and regular tution fees on students. Well, my experience here gives that not only teen agers who just completed ISce will be interested in this type of college, but, those who crossed already 30, will be interested. I can see such aged students the night classes here. 7. Consulting work: Its what all half employed Nepalis do, its like Kheti pati in Nepal. I mean seasonal. 8. Well, when I went to Nepal two years back I took a snack made of rice cakes. Dried, salted and wonderful taste that matches Nepali taste. One of my cousine (who is in biz) was interested. But, when I acquired the company for a machine and its installation cost, they asked 10-20crore Jap. yen. Well, the person even told that we must be able to sell 2,000tons of rice every year to make real profit. My czn was still interested, but, we thought of having problem of having such big stocks and selling network. Well, it could be a very good store of rice for some problematic areas like western Nepal, in addition to everyday Khaja to many nepali kids to adults and some exports to India. But, we did not have that much of resource 10 t o20crore = 12crore Nepali rupees. If you are interested, I can send you samples of the snacks. "O-SEMBE". 9. Roller coaster like thing from Kaski kot to middle of it and while returning to kot, we could use over land cable car: I had seen such in Hakone route in Japan. Its just two bus they run up and down on railway like track and tied on a GHIRNI (PULLY), like dahi mathne dori. So, simple, so cheap and but, full of fun: the combination. 10. Secret.

10. Secret.

Top 10business plan I ever had in my mind (some of them given by my own friends). 1. The plan in 1988: We were in a hut like lodge near horse race course, New Delhi. That was so fablous, our friends who were all returning fresh after graduating from an Indian Univ. now one of the many IITs. We were excited with its style. In Pokhara, we dreamt of we could make a cluster of such huts, probably Kharle chayeka. Not only for foreigners, but, also for Nepali youngs. Well, 50% concession is regular for Saarc citizens. Most feasible places: a. Chhinedanda near Bhir (three side sourrounded by Bhir) b. South of Dhunga sanghu c. Seti-Pardi ko dovan (well, Diabolic knows this place better than me). d. Kaski Kot. This concept still works, if you can spend about ek crore rupiya. 2. A Big billboard. The Idea I got from Hollywood. The hollywood was posted in current hollywood by one Real estate agent in 1920s(?) which has very big characters. Now, LA city spends millions of dollars every year to keep it upto date. Similarly, why not we build one Big Board in Kahu ko danda "Welcome to POKHARA" and in night we use lightening system, as an advertisig board. The land is cheap. Make it the biggest Billboard in the world. Big enough to be caught by CNN's satelite TV camera about 700km above earth surface. Direct Advertisement .............(crazy idea, though). Your (did not want to use "YOUR", but forced, to blame on you, sorry) software/program is really making my postings crazy, they, just keep on giving error message or hang on, and make readers feel HahooGuru gone crazy. Real apology to all readers, lets hope San will delete the repeatition. At least, san can introduce a new check to check whether the content in this posting is exactly same as previous postings, so that it avoids, repeated postings, at least you can check immediately previous one. well, this check will again delay in posting, but, worth avoid deletion in future. Je hos afno milne dost ho ghus nakhaye ma AMALE bhe pani farak pardaina. Kaski basi kasaile Khage le ghus khayo ma malai bhannu, ma bold letter chithi pathai /ya afai uskaha gai Khage sanga clarify garne chhu, kina ghus khais bhanera. I think I have that much of guts and relation being his old dude. I wish he don't become ghusyaha, though, some kangressies told me that he takes ghus, but, when I found he still lives in Begnash, near Hamro mama ghara, and does not have lavish lifestyle. I still believe he is clean, though these days its very difficult to find clean peoples in UML as well as NC. I am sorry to distort the topic. Well, I don't think I will have the biz plans as you mentioned in your 11-14... Well, I might have a cybercafe at the center of Mahendra Pool (not exactly at center, kinaki tyaha ta Traffic Police ko platform chha). Well, just behind the Hulak. "Hahoo CyberCafe". In this Cafe, if any characters you mentioned in your guess plan come, I have nothing to say. I am waiting for favorable time. Bro Diaolic, why don't you join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pokhara/ may be we can have better biz plan with other Pokhareli Yaar haru sanga. BTW, I liked Halo jotaune plan. Thats a good idea. It will work, but, have you ever tried Halo jotne kaam. Well, as a kid I tried a lot with Bikase halo as well as kathe halo. Once upon a time, our hali could not come on the day of Ropai, for a half day, I was formal Hali had to compete with professional hali. No kidding. That is now such a great memorble thing. K K matrai gariyen hou. Pokhara ko sab bhanda thulo problem was dhan ropda pani laune, and barsheni jhara tarna janu paarne. Thanks to Chinese, who made Irrigation canals and brought continuous water. No believes how tough time we had before the project was completed. I think Irrigation projects in different part of country can be privatized, I mean let people invest and get share, at least construction of diversion headworks and canal construction upto the "MOUTH" of khet. Peoples can pay little in return to possibility of hiude kheti. There were 1000s of feasibility studies at DOI but, all most all the reports are fake, from my experience. Otherwise, this can be another way to mobilize local money into local project. Users group could develop a biz. plan and get 50% from govt. and 50% from private biz. group funding and get best hiude kheti "Dhan" or "Gahu". Who has time to think so far. HahooGuru

If I had money, I would invest in the following projects in Nepal: a. amusement park near ktm valley. -- we need to build something where millions of people can have fun… bhrikuti mandap is not enough. Nepalese people should not go aboard just for a roller coaster ride… this can be another cable car business in terms of profit making. b. I-max theater in ktm – if kira-sari movie theaters are making profit, I’m sure I-max could survive. People need change…. We can learn from caravan’s success. c.Butterfly pavelian – this is my personal interest for educational and conservation purpose. I heard there are more than 5-600 different species of butterflies only in arun valley. If we all depend on nature, it may not take long before they disappear. gaule

If you are multimillionnaire, its time to have professional soccer (Football) League in Nepal. Let players be divided into various teams sponsored by various companies that appeared name above (at the start of this series). Have 1 and half hours Football cam almost every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in different part of the country and show it in TV Live. May be via free TV or via Cable TV. I am sure you will turn out to be billionnniare. We need good management and who will want to see ANFA, but, will love to watch Nepal Football League, in short you call it N-League. It will promote football game, and give job to the kheladin their own profession. and entertainment to Peoples. Atleast the youth will have something to talk and go in weekends, and I am sure there will be less rallies by AMALE and NC. Less vandalism. You will have something for TimePass. Think of N-League, or Everest-League or whatever may be even E-league. Well, some guys will even start betting (chk . spl.) who will win today's game 1 ko 10, and diabolic bhai this will be another mini Las Vegas in Nepal. (dark side of such league). Nepali officials (at sports club) can be smashed only if we privatize the football game, and let players decide whether to hang in Sports club or in Pro. football. I am sure myself or My hahooCafe will be interested in partly / sponsoring one player in Gandaki Team. At least salary equal to govt. section officer, and Surya Bdr KC, Hari Pandey Machhapuchre Bank Rara Noodles, Goshali Manakamana Cable Cars .... can sponsor Gandaki Team. Its just a matter of management, if you have dedicated peoples in the management board, you can run N-League or e-League or H-(himalaya)-league whatever name you choose. It might even change the life style of Nepali youngs. Diabolic Bhai, lets keep our private identity out and discuss on this topic only. I do not find this place a good for disclosing who you are. Since last month, when a guy who chased me and put me in his write ups disgustingly for fun, I have no guts to face real ID. World is so cruel. Sorry to disappoint you. Since I am a private citizen without enjoying any public position in Nepal, there is no need to be my ID public. Well, you can join yahoogroups various groups and I will be there with my own real ID. Sajha.com has to go very far to be proud of your real ID. HahooGuru

Lekhnath NP: I think Lekhnath NP should be rather part of Pokhara NP, share the market flow in Pokhara by both. The budget differences in these NPs are something like step mothers kids. One is like fat cat and other jhumre marna lagya biralo. Our ward chief who is unfotunately also my own classmate and (MeetChhora.. of Tare. Tare goes there to help him[Prajantratic Party ko manche] in the election. Though Tare is a big guy in NC, but, he forgets his political alignment when it comes to local election). Our ward chairman gets as big amount as Rs. 45 lakhs in each fiscal year. Its because Pokhara NP is hung, and UML does not have majority, thus, they pay big sum to 14 and Hamro ward chairman and ask for blind sign in all deals. When I was there I had chance to attend a meeting where he wanted peoples to retreat a case that is in pending in CDO office against corruption charges. And, he played a game with ....sts and burned down the ward office building, so destroyed all the stuffs. Its sure he did it, because he was threatening in the last meeting that if the case is not withdrawn, he knows other methods too. I had guessed it. Because its usual trick in Nepal, as Sita Ram did in 2046 when Bahudal was announced, and simialry in KTM anchaladhish ko office was burned down ..... So, its trick that works well and all corrupts get excused. If the currently on going Adhyadesh where Sher Bahadur wants to bring down comes to action i.e. all those who did corruption after 2046 (I heard), then, Khume and Govinde will burn down the Home Ministry. I bet it. Even Girija might try, because of Dhamija kanda. Well, such free money is floating in Pokhara and Lekhnath NP has no project, unfortunately, don't have any other black topped road other than Prithvi highway and Begnash Tal jodne road. Lets talk on 3000 ropani. I know there is quite a huge are un-inhabitated in Pokhara Valley. Most of the lands were given to Landslide victims in 2030 ko decade. And, most of them had hard time getting registered in their own name. In Lekhnaht also, they had such land. They were offering 200 ropani and asking 7crore project from ADB be diverted to Lekhnath where they can install Garbage burning and dumping site. Pokhara mayor had to loss the share in 75lakhs of rupees that turned out to be free money given by ADB if the dumping site project comes in to action. I had also attended one meeting, but, Kantipur Publication got propaganda share and never mentioned this side of report. Shame on Kantipur Publication. That 200 ropani could change face of Lekhnath NP, I mean the Lekhnath NP Mayor had genuine interest to make some roads connecting heart of Lekhnath with Prithvi highway then dumping site. I don't know personally who is Mayor of Lekhnath NP. But, Pokhara Mayor got Kalomuso from local peoples when he tried use his gundas who left the scene when the saw huge mass of local peoples. Good Job. I mean Pokhara's Mayors were always corrupt, I feel so sorry. Lets move to another story. In Lekhnath NP. they offered 1200 ropani to Pokhara University. From this Jan. (in my meet with a .... of Pokhara Univ head office in Pokhara) they will be having a office building in Lekhnath NP. unfortunately, most of the 1200 ropani land is occupied by political "so called" landless (in fact all fake peoples: as I am also a landless in real world) from all major parties. So, in paper Lekhnath offered to Pokhara Univ., but, I am not sure when will they get the land. In this emergency period they might be able to make barabed wire boundary wall. So, there is still more land in Lekhnath NP or Pokhara where we used to let free our cattles for graze when we were kid. There is still some more land where authorities are rushing for registration. In Panchayat time, the Narayan Lal... , raj durbar ko sachib registered 80ropani land and got mohiyani from Proposed airport. Pokhara valley must be crying for the cruelity that peoples have done. It will continue. Lets hope some good biz. people will bring good plan to us like Fulbari or Annapurna ... hotels and create jobs. HahooGuru

All you guys are on crack! Totally fu.ck.ed up. You know what your argument sounds like?........like those kids who say "If every person in this world gave me one dollar each, I'll have six billion dollars" What Psychos. If you really want to be an enterpreneur either start witin your means or come up with an idea that others might want to invest in. If it were as easy as posting on the internet, money would be cheap.
