INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN MUSEUM
Project of the Nepal Mountaineering Association
Opening: May 29, 2002
Venue: Pokhara, Nepal

With the objective to record, document, and to chronicle
the past and the present development of mountaineering
activities in the world in general and to preserve the
history of great mountaineering feats achieved in the
history of mountaineering in the Himalayan peaks. It also
looks forward to documenting culture and lifestyle of
mountain people, including flora, fauna and geology.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has almost
finalized the building of the International Mountain Museum
(IMM) on a six-hectare site in Pokhara - the scenic lake
city, blessed with uninterrupted views of the Annapurna
and Dhaulagiri ranges of western Nepal.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is the national
mountaineering association of Nepal. This association was
founded in 1973 with the aim to promote mountaineering
activities in the Himalayan region, to safeguard the interest
of and to upgrade the professional and mountaineering skills
of Nepalese mountaineers, to popularize mountaineering
activities among Nepalese students and youths, and to create
awareness both at national and international levels to
preserve the beauty of theHimalayan region for posterity.

The phase one of the IMM project includes the completion of
the displays for the main Museum Hall building which will
house the halls for exhibits and displays, an audio visual
hall and conservation room for exhibits.

The Museum Hall
building covers a total floor area of 4242 Sq. meter of the
total 12.5 acres of the land owned by the Nepal Mountaineering
Association (NMA) for the IMM Project. There will be two main
exhibition halls in the Museum Hall: The Hall of the Great
Himalaya and the Hall of the World Mountains.

These Halls will
have models of famous peaks, mannequins of famous climbers,
equipment and material used in mountaineering, culture and
life styles of mountain people; flora and fauna including
geological information.

The Government of Nepal has extended sincere support to
this project with allocation of funds in the appropriation of
the annual national budget.

in Japan comprising of the
Japan Mountaineering Association, the Japanese Alpine Club,
the Japan Workers Alpine Federation, the Himalayan Association
of Japan, the Japan Nepal Society, the Himalayan Adventure
Trust - Japan, the China/Tibet Mountaineering Association
(CTMA), the Chinese Mountaineering Association, the Indian
Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), the Korean Alpine Federation
(KAF), Corean Alpine Club (CAC), the Hiroshima Mountaineering
Federation, Former Japanese Prime Minister - Ryutaro Hashimoto,
Alpine Tour Research Japan, Mr. Fumiko Tanaka, Mr. Shimuzu,
Mr. Tanegura, Mr.Ingyongho, late Dawa Norbu Sherpa - President
of NMA, Mr. Jip Tshering Sherpa - President of Nepal Sherpa
Association, Mr.Ang Tshering Sherpa - Asian Trekking,
Mr.Tashi Sherpa - Asian Airlines, Mr.K.D.Adhikari - Global
Construction, Mr.In Jeong Lee - Gen Sec. UAAA.
The UIAA (The International Climbing and Mountaineering
Federation) General Assembly held Oct 7 -11, '98 in Maleka
Malaysia unanimously endorsed the International Mountain
Museum, Pokhara project. The UAAA (The Asian Climbing and
Mountaineering Association) endorsed the project in Nov. 1995
when its second general assembly was held in Kathmandu.
The Mountaineering Association of Malaysia (PMM), the Islamic
Republic Iranian Mountaineering Federation (IRIMF) and
Center Excursionist de Catalunya has also informed NMA about
their intention to support the IMM project.

For the proposed displays graphic displays from the Andean
South America and African mountain massifs, and their social
and natural environments are urgently required. The Mountain
Forum in Kathmandu is thus making a call to its members from
these regions to contribute photographs, diagrams, charts and
other graphic material that could be rolled and send by mail.
All contributors will be credited properly in both, the Museum
as well as in the MF electronic network. The Museum opens its
doors on May 29, 2002; thus, contributions should ideally
reach us no later than mid-April.

The Mountain Forum Secretariat plans to hand over all the
contributions to the Nepal Mountaineering Association at a
public ceremony no later than mid-April.
