Nepal claim upset victory over Pakistan Lynn McConnell - 22 January 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nepal may be the location of the world's highest mountains but their Under-19 World Cup cricketers scaled the cricketing heights with a momentous upset victory in the ICC event in Christchurch today. Nepal, who had given England a bit of stick in their opening game yesterday, beat Pakistan by 30 runs at Lincoln Green. Batting first Nepal scored 151 in 48.5 overs. No 3 batsman and vice captain Bardan Chalise provided a handy innings of 42 off 87 balls to steer his towards a reasonable score. Good support was provided by Kanishka Chaugai (15), Manjit Shrestha (17) and Sanjam Regmi (16). Junaid Zia was the pick of the Pakistan attack taking four for 34 from his 10 overs while Kamran Sajid took four for 35 off 7.5 overs. At 84/3, Pakistan must have felt they were cruising toward a comfortable victory. But the dismissal of Khaqan Arsal for 24 when he was trapped leg before wicket by Sakthi Gauchan set in train a mini-collapse as Asim Munir and Amin-ur-Rehman fell with the score at 90. And when Junaid went at 112, Pakistan were on the ropes and the Nepalese never let them off. Pakistan were all out for 121. Gauchan ended with three for 19 from his 10 overs, an outstanding effort while Regmi took three for 27 from 9.4 overs.

Well done, Nepal. We have great cricketing future, but it's Nepal's great future as int'l cricket venue that attracts me most. 1. Being the only non-Test playing nation in S. Asia (discounting Maldives and Bhutan), Nepal can be promoted as neutral venue. Pakistan and India are not even exchanging visits and are willing to go as far as Sarjah and Canada to meet each other. 2. Other than Monsoon, Nepal's conditions are ideally suited for the game. Not 40s like in India during the summer, when cricket turns into boredom in dead wickets amid heat and dust. 3. The country, certianly Cricket Ass. Nepal, can make millions by way of TV rights and that means a lot to the country's poor cricket infrastructure. 4. Cricket tourism. Tourists from test playing nations--as Australia, NZ, England, South Africa--would want to mix climbing with cricket. Don't discount the high-spending Indians who would just hop from B'bay or Delhi and spend a few nights in our five-star hotels. A number of cricket greats, including Greg Chappell and Tony Greig, have spoken highly of Nepal's great potential as cricket center. Let's face it, Kathmandu and Pokhara sound so much more exotic than Guwahati, Cochin, and even Kolkotta.

Whatever the hell this Cricket thing is, this news is a welcome one. But , again didn't we beat Kuwait in 1981 Asiad and ignited hope about our future of good Football team? We mess up things, because we don't think about organic improvement of games and the government still takes sports committee as 'bharti kendra'. If only politicians could play game..

Biswoji: Among the former Panchas, Lokendra B. Chand and Kamal Thapa are/were good soccer players. Li Kwan Yu once started a very interesting fitness campaign in S'pore. We could do with something similar. To sart with, the Great Baikuntha Manandhar should lead Deuba, Makune, and S. B. Thapa, with their ever-bulging buddies in tow, to Tudikhel. Kisunji, no doubt, will prfer to cheer up from the sidelines, chewing is paan!!!

VVji: Reading 'baarau Khelaadi' (in Hiun ko tanna?) of Lokendra Chanda was interesting. Baarau Khelaadi and Bhutpurba( title correct?), sadly, represents the dapper and amicable politician's present status. Also, I didn't know Chandaji and Thapaji were players themselves.

I made a couple shows in Tudikhel for my school team. I was also with Baluwatar for a little while. But other priorities took me away from the game.
