depends. most of the new dvd players play dvd, vcd and cd (and mp3 in some cases) but u need to check it before. unless it says that it does, dvd players don't play vcd.

I'm probably the least technical person on the face of this earth, but I can tell you from personal experience that while a VCD works on a PC DVD player, it doesn't work on a regular DVD player.

It actually depends upon the model. A lot of models from Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Harman Kardon etc are available that supports multiple formats. Check in the product information to see if it can play VCDs. Same would apply for MP3, CD-R, CD-RW. I don't think there are any that plays SACD though. And if you are shopping for one, other desirable features to look for would be component video output, DTS etc. I prefer the Sony. It might be a good idea to get the extended warranty too.

Most DVD players can play VCDs. (Actually I don't know any that doesn't play. May be very old models) However, some DVD players don't play "SOME" VCDs. Whereas some DVD players play "ALL" VCDs. If you get VCDs from Nepal, check out the backside of the VCD. If it is green (or blue), then new model Sony player, for example, will not play it. IF the black side is white/silver then it is fine. Since the green back is cheaper than the silver back, Nepali/Hindi VCDs are recorded on the cheaper ones. Any new DVD players that play CD-R should play all types of VCDs. If you are thinking of buying a DVD player that plays VCDs from back home, buy one from Pioneer (progressive scan) or Pnasonic that plays CD-R, or a cheap Korean product. (I sold my Sony on eBay that didn't play and bought Pioneer that plays.) If you already have a DVD player and it doesn't play VCDs from back home (one with green on the back side), then here is what I used to do: buy a bundle of CD-RW. NOT CD-R. Using a re-writable CD-ROM of your PC, copy the original VCD to a new CD-RW. Your DVD should play the new copied VCD (that is on CD-RW). Since you can erase and rewrite on this CD-RW, you can reuse for a new copy later. Same goes for the music CD. Once copied on CD-RW, your DVD player should be able to play songs/music from Nepal. Hope it helps. Khoi KeBhanam Aba

Bought an Apex® Progressive Scan DVD Player just recently from Sam's Club. They cost around $130.00 These are the best as far as I can tell. I tested copied DVDs and VCDs, original DVDs and VCDs, MP3 and even CD-R and CD-RW and they all worked great!. This system supports both PAL and NTSC format. DVD/VCD shopper
