Until highschool, jounalists were not among the most admired people I had in my mind.Padam Thakurathi ,who used to run Bimarsha then, was shot by a feared gunda, and we all read the famous headline of Bimarsha " Yeuta Goli Mero Breakfast ho" (one shot is my breakfast..),and tried to figure out why and who shot the journalist. Then Keshav Pidali went to jail for publishing Rup Chandra Bista's poems. We knew of these things,we were avid reader of Bimarsha and we were grown up in simmering political world of Chitwan, still we never found any journalist as our ideal!! One of the reasons was the grammatically incorrect writing in those newspapers that I could easily detect.Rhashwa, Deergha, sentence imcompletion etc used to be so rampant in every paper. The writing standard was often very low, and weeklies were more prone to writing sloganist report than any acadamic article. We were grown up hearing those slogans,so reading those articles will be only superfluous! Some of our political leaders often inscribe grammatically impeccable and verbally 'standard' articles. BPKoirala was so good in Sanskrit,Nepali,Hindi and English that reading his novels or story still inspires enthusiasm in me.Communist leaders are also full of language skill. They use such recherche Sanskrit between their revolutionary report that it takes more than normal time to understand their article.I think ,when I read Prachanda's article in Kantipur even now, most of the people in Nepal probably can't understand his articles.Leaders are unlike writers, because writers can live in a small world of their targeted audience.Leaders need to stretch their arm to every of hoi polloi. Having said this,I want to point out the insurgent trend in Nepali journals for grammatically correct and verbally standard articles. In Suruchi, Shiva Adhikari used to write very good article.(I don't know the current status of Suruchi though.) Currently,Deshantar,Himal and Kantipur are on the front of good writing.Suresh Acharya, Dixits, Guna Raj Luitel(I liked his recent article on Bamdev Gautam very much),Hem Raj Gyawali etc are vanguards in this front,I believe! The editorial in Kantipur is always flawless, and extremely recommendable.I don't know if Yuv Raj Ghimire writes it or somebody else. Since I have met several journalists who used some businessmen's money to run the newspaper, and wrote only those articles that his financer liked, and stopped publishing whenever the businessmen wanted him to close,I think I still need some time to respect journalists as a whole. But ,as I can guess ,there is clearly a new trend in journalism of Nepal. Our scribes are more cautious for their right, knowledgeable about their power, and can correctly use their scimitar whenever need arise! (This article is not a research article.Just ,what is probably,a stream-of-conscience!)
