I have a Cisco 675 DSL router. This connected to to new installed Red Hat 7.1 Linux box via a hub. The IP address of this Linux box is 10.0.0.3 and the IP of DSL router is 10.0.0.1.

How do I tell the Linux box (or its NIC card eth0) to go out to the internet via 10.0.0.1 using it as a gateway?

The linux box can ping the router (10.0.0.1) but can't ping sites like www.yahoo.com. Can anyone help me?

Hi,

Make the router a gateway. su to root and you can use a tool such as control-pannel. or do it manually by going to /etc directory. make sure to include your IP in hosts. then go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
and run ipdown and ipup with eth0.

./ipdown eth0

you are good to go....

I hope this helps....

Hi,

I am gald that it worked for you. I am also glad that you are into Linux. What a great OS... don't you agree.? and does not cost you a buck. RedHat 7.1 has some security issues. one of them is TCP Dump. 7.2 however allows you to set it up as a firewall. with that kind of setup you'll need to manually install SSH cleint and server and samething for telnet. otherwise, it is completely un pingable and unreachable.

checkout the doom for Linux.....
also get the mtools that way you don't have to mount your fd0 and cdroms. mtools work just like DOS utils....

get the KDE 2.2.2 or Beta 3.0 (make sure to have QT 3.0 for KDE 3.0 Beta at kde.org). I am sure you will enjoy this new Window manager. Console allows you to open multiple TERMs within the same console. and you can shift thru the terminals using shift and left or right arrow. I thought this is a real nice feature.

Konqueror sucks but what do you expect for 2.2.1 version? They are getting better. I am a Lynx kinda guy except when there are 20000 images on the site. Mozilla is better for that including this site. I still enjoy typing to do housekeeping..

Welcome to the club. Contact me if you have any questions about Linux.....

Sainju ji,

Actually my line of work is Windows 2000. :)

I installed Linux (Red Hat 7.1) one on of my home machine. It is a 300 Mhz machine w/ 48 MB EDO RAM. I don't think I can do much w/ it except to make a firewall, but I am experimenting with it to see what else can I do w/ it.

What do you think of Apache Server on Linux?
SMSainju Posted on 30-Jan-02 02:19 PM

Hi,

Apache is the mother of all webservers. I would stay away from IIS if I were you. there is a saying in linux community. 486 is a terrible thing to waste, put linux on it.....

I would encourage you to use linux. Alan Cox, one of the kernel developers, during DC linux expo said, software is like sex, it is good if it is free :)

I think Open source is the way. Apache has almost 70% of the market share. If I were you, I would stay away from windows.

If you can get a static IP, you can hosts sites at your home ( i am assuming you have at least 300K bandwidth). Put oracle , and you have DB Server, Put MySql, Put ColdFusion and etc. if configured properly damn box would not crash. I have a box now running for 345 days straight. I have about 48 users, oracle, MySql, serveral sites hosted, runs on a T-1. (use uptime to check how long it's been up).

SMSainju dai, maybe you can help me. I have a dual boot machine with Win XP and Red Hat 7.2 . (BTW, I am new to Linux and don't know a lot) I have another machine and a laptop both running Win XP networked together and using a router to access the internet via ADSL. I eventually wanna be Microsoft Free. I need to be able to read and access the XP PCs from Linux. How do I do that. I need to access my Linux box from remote sites. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Neonsigns Ji,

First of all, I'd like to welcome you to the linux world and cogratulate you for the effort to try linux and adopt it for your use. Please do not be overwhelmed by the notion that linux is complex. Linux is like a race car. If you know how to drive, you will not want to get out of it. So much for that.

7.2 is the best Linux package RedHat has ever produced in terms of security and stability. Of course Linux has always been a very stable OS.

If you want to dual boot Linux with windows, I'd encourage you to use LILO. Lilo by far is the best. Make sure to install Windows before Linux ( i am assuming you have partitioned your hard drive for 2 Gig for Linux). Use fdisk (whethere it is of windows or linux does not matter, or partition magic for that matter). Windows cleans up the MBR(master boot record) thus cleaning LILO from MBR. you can reinstall LILO but it is easier to simply install linux after you install windows. If you want to kill Lilo, use a boot floppy (dos is fine) and then fdisk /mbr it will clean lilo from MBR. you will no longer be able to boot to linux....

There is a software package called VMWare which allows you to switch from windows to linux and vice versa without having to reboot. But it is not free. I don't use it but I heard it is good.

Now for connecting to the box via internet, there are many different ways. SAMBA is a very good tool. install samba as a client/server depending on your need and just simply follow the instruction. It allows you to see windows on your linux box. You can certainly use other tools such as Telnet, R-tools (rlogin, rsh) or SSH (the most secured way). I'd encourage you to get a book on linux and start breaking things and fixing.. this is the most effective way to learn linux.

If you already have linux installed and configured properly so that it is on the network then simply create an account for yourself and use telnet or ssh(slogin) to connect to your machine. You have to give the host name to the ssh client or telnet client so that it understand what host to fetch it. such as
ssh -l username HOST (130.140.XXX.XXX) or telnet HOST(XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX).

I hope you will find this information useful. I'd really encourage you to get a book and start breaking and fixing. That really is the best way to learn.

I wish you a very good one.

Sainjuji,

I have one Windows 2000 Prof machine and one Linux Red hat 7.1 machine. Both of these are connected to the ADSL router which has DHCP server. I can ping Win2k machine from Linux and vice versa.

My question is how do I share HD directories between the Linux machine and Win2k machine? When the Linux machine used to be 98 machine I would have no problem sharing the drives. But now I need to know how do I do the same in this one linux box, one Win2k box scenario.

Hi Kancho ji,

Use SAMBA. Install samba (tar or rpm). once you install it make sure to add the samba daemon in your /sbin/chkconfig. Please read the README file for instructions.

do the following

/sbin/chkconfig --list this will show you what kinds of things are running at what level. UNIX systems have 0-6 differet levels. You can control what you want to run on what level. Check the man page. I would recommend that you add samba here up to the level 5 as your window manger runs on level 5. then check the process. ps -aux|grep "sambad" if you see it, you are cool but if not then just go to /etc/init.d/ and then start the samba daemon by shutting it down and then starting up.

./sambad stop
./sambad start

then check the ps again (ps -aux |grep "sambad" , by the way you can't use aux option on solaris (-ef))

I hope this helps.

Actually if you're not yet comfortable with Linux or KDe or that matter, you can use Komba. Go to http://rpmfind.net and search for Komba. Rpmfind.net is a very good place to find rpms that are distribution specific.

I got turned on to Linux and KDE by the president of the KDE league. He is a good friend a client of mine. According to him, as soon soon as the KDE3 is stable [about 2-3 months away] and open office comes out with a stable version, KDE will be a viable alternative to WinBlows.

I personally have have tried all flavors of Linux and tend to like Mandrake for WorkStation use and Redhat. I have it running in couple computers and it just runs man. I have not had to reboot it for anything. I use it for everything. I access my Windows Servers using the RdeskTop for terminal sessions. I had to tweak it a bit but works perfect with full colors et all.

Welcome all to the wonderful world of Linux. I have 15 servers runinng Linux which I don;t even have to bother checking and 20 servers running windows which I have to check on at least once every 2 days so go add the math.

Late !
