I am NOT sure about "Bidwans" per se, but some of the really interesting/fascinating personalities I have had the pleasure to meet
and do guff-suff and who are (originally) from Pokhara are:

a) Mr. Durga Baral -- the self-effacing cartoonist who is also a very famous
senior artist. He's the got the purest, most joyous smile I have ever seen on
anybody.

b) Mr. Anup Baral -- Durga's eldest son. A well-known theater director. Anup is a graduate of the prestigious National School of Drama in India, and I was very impressed with one play he directed "Jaatai Sod.hnu Jogi ko", which was on for only a day last year at the Academy Hall.

c) Mr. Jaggan Nath Adhikari -- a first-rate scholar on matters of food scarcity and related environmental issues in Nepal.

d) Mr. Saru Bhakta -- the poet and the writer; easily the Dean of Pokhreli
Bohemia, if there is one.

d) Ms. Ashmina Ranjit -- a bold, innovative artist whose approach to art has challenged and unsettled conventional thinking about women, women's sexuality
and feminism in Nepal. Plus, if I may so, she's incredibly attractive.

Disclosure: I met and got to know all of the above at various Martin Chautari discussions.

I should've said Fascinating Poeple rather than Bidhwans:

Kabi Keshari: Dharmaraaj Thapa, the folk poet.
Gyanu Rana, his daughter.

Jhalak Thapa (you know the one who's got an organic farm and is an advent environmentalist).

Madan KC: the pilot, in fact he is almost from my Gaam. He is rich too, I heard the Cinema Hall in GaganGauda is his. I remember in the old days, everytime there was a plane flying overhead, people would look up and say: here goes Madan.
LokGeetPremi Posted on 25-Jan-02 11:17 AM

Don't forget Ali Miya, the winner of Madan Puraskar.

Since I didn't see Hahoo Guru dai adding anymore name, I am taking this immense opportunity.

The name that I want to add is:

Dr. G. P.

With all these ongoing topics, it is sure indeed of great oppertunity that we get to express our thought, read what others write with different perspectives and sometimes comment on others. I have not been actively involved here but I occassionally find interesting to read. But, I see some people do participate here just to put negative thoughts on whatever the others write. If you want me, I can pinpoint the "JODEE" whose main purpose is to actively balme on their opponents no matter what........ Guys!!..cmmmmmon....it is not a MTV Singled out show......

Few Pokhareli Bidhwans:
(educated, dedicated, and passionnate)

1. Dr. ... Subedi (once he was Shaha Sachib at
Raj Durbar). I heard he was kicked out of job
because he rejected Surya Bahadur Thapa's orders
to all things, when Surya was PM of Nepal.
(he was from Lamjung, Kaski, Tanahu ko junction
i.e. Karputare Subedi)

2. Dr. Guna Nidhi Poudel: A Big shot in AIT
and now works ... in Bangladesh. Looks like
Hero, but professionally, very competent
and recognized worldwide in his field.
(Dual personality: Questionable Private life).

3. Dr. Sigdel (now a big shot in department of
Survey, and my purano teacher at AmarSingh).
He is among the group who rejected NGS's
findings of increasing ht. of Mt. Everest.

4. Dr. Sukh B. Gurung,a big shot in Geotechnical
Engineering. Still has to go long way. A leader
in Geotech. in Nepal.

5. Dr. Krishna Pahari, a big shot in GIS technology.

6. Dr. Tiwari from Arghou (nick named Kalam Tiwari).
He was teacher in PN Campus and moved to AIT,
and don't know after that.

7. Mr. Dharma Raj Thapa. I was surprised to meet
him at the Bus Stand and when I saluted him
with DuiHaat ko Namaskar, he identified me. Great,
not only as Jana Kavi keshari.

8. Mr. Lakchhya Bdr. Gurung, Bhut Purba Kanoon
Minister.

9. Long time NC Kaski Chairperson. Naam Bhule.

10. Khage, Khag Raj Adhikari, my old dude. He
used to represent Kaski Jilla ko Student ko tarfa bata
and go to dias and give speech in front of thousands
of peoples when he was just 12years old. Even amale
gurus of his, made him whip in Parliament. He was
brilliant.

11. Ananda Raj Mulmi.
12. Beni Bahadur Karki ... (he was chair of some
recognized position for some time).

13. Mr. Krishna, Dase Krishna ji or Mandar Krishna ji.
14. Dr. Chetak, in the Department of Forestry...
He was Saha-Director General, and I was surprised
to find him that He knows Ashu very well.

15. < > don't want to publish his name here. but, he
brought a lot of changes while he was in the
Education Ministry. Many schools were given
approval, and one of them that I studied
as Nima Ma. School.

16. Some more from Khage's gau, Matthan,
and ....

Because, I have to attend
an imp. meeting just in a few minute.

Unfortunately, I have not encountered very Bidwan
woman from Pokhara -Kaski. It seems all woman
get marry and satisfy with the Married life. Let me
hope with my daughter, one day. If I had my younger
sister, I would surely have tried to make one
Bidwan Mahila from Pokhara. Unfortunately, I
had no Sis.

Still, there is one Bidwan didi from Pokhara, i.e.
daughter of Dharma Raj Thapa, haha male haha
halo jotne tati ... gayekkar (Jana kabi keshari)
ko daughter, Mrs. Gyanu Rana, who used to be
great singer. I am not sure what she is doing now,
but, she should be the pride of Pokhareli People.

Who else?

Well, Sparsha added Dr. GP 's name in the Bidwan's
list from Pokhara. I think its too early to judge on
his achievements. Let us wait some more years,in order
to put him in that row/list. Well, lets hope he will be
one good candidate in future, but, not at this
moment. He has just finished the studies, and study
alone should not be the only yard to measure for a bidwan.

Well, some more peoples, that I like to add.

Arjun Gurung (Arjun dai): who contributed in sports in Pokhara.
(Unfortunately, he died in the search of Mani in
Rautahat).
Hariswor Pokharel "now black belt" was the Nepal champion in
his wieght group and went to various Int'l competitions like
Asian Olympic and ....don't remember all .

Amar Singh ko Purani Head Sir who was sacked by politicians
and brought Pashu" Parashu Ram.... KC... I forgot his real name".
The Pashu was the worst guy in Pokhara who spoilt one of the
best school into the worst scool That Hali le mero pani
kan padkayeko chha gadha le. He died very badly I heard.
Student ko Sarap lageko, ........So, lets add some more
worst people in Pokhara too.

Some more Bidwans from Pokhara:

Lets note down all major if we have in mind, so that we
can create a new "Who is who in Pokhara".

1. The Science ko Teacher in Ascol (Amrit Science
College) whose many students are Engineers,
Doctors and Politicians. Baral sir ko naam ke ho?

2. Well, I forgot his (Baral Sir ko Chhori) daughter was one of the possible
lady Bidwans. She was ranked number 1 among girls student
in SLC a few years back. Anyone know her name?

3. Arjun Jung Shahi (son of former Kaski ko Savapati
during Panchayat kaal). He was villian (I guess in
some Nepali movie) where Shiva Shrestha was hero.
Now, Arjun Jung Shahi is SP (Police) in stationed
in Birjung (source:TKP).

4. Bishnu from Dhunga Saghu, (my own former classmate
during Middle school), now DSP in Police ... Training
Center, in Kathmandu. I met him last year in
Airport.

5. Mr. Gurung (forgot his name), I think he worked in
Wild life... .office, Lukle ... Project. Can someone
identify his name. He was my brothers good friend and
I met him a couple of times and I realized him a great
person, and My bro. was also agreeing with me.
I think he studied MSc in zoology. He is already a
big shot there, and he is a very honest hard working
personality.

6. .... Ghale, Chhetra Pratap (?) ..there used to be another
Sports teacher in Amar Singh who was pulled
directly to a very high post in sports for his great job
as PT master during King's visit in Pokhara. He later became
Sahayak minister too. Can any one recall his name.

Can someone add some new Gayekkars, Music Band groups
and Hero-Heroin in Nepali movies and beauties in
different beauty contests.

You didn't mean to list only those who were born in Pokhara, right?

George John: he singlehandedly established the P.N. Campus;
Saroj Gopan: in his prime, he was extremely popular singer;

Jhalak Man Gandharva: an uniquely Pokhareli Gaine singer (Aamaa le sodhlan nee ... fame)
Dr. Jagdish L. Baidya: in partnership with Dr. Baskota, started the boom of "modern" private hospitals in Nepal;
Aren't Kandara band members from Pokhara?
What is the full name of the artist who signs his paintings as Ranjit? Krishna Ranjit?

Keep adding ...
KeBhanam Posted on 26-Jan-02 12:35 AM

Sorry, I meant Saroj Gopal.

Min Bahadu Gurung: the Danfe Club owner.

Prem Rana Autari: Danfe Club graduate
Diabolic Posted on 26-Jan-02 12:52 AM

I think Hari Pande and Bishnu Pande should be mentioned here.

They were the first to build Noodles Plant (Copied from Rara) in Nepal. They were also the first one to build Buscuit plant (Copied or after maintenance experience from Shiva-Shankar Buscuit facotry). As far as I know, both the brothers did not have formal education (meaning they were not engineers) and came to Pokhara from Gulmi/Argaghachi(?). They are the ones who turn "mitti" into "gold". I am amazed by how far these people have come and with such diligent hard work.
Pokhara Buscuit and Pokhara Noodles (Ramba) are their own creations. If you give them your schematic/design, they can build anything for you.

Haridevi Koirala: The singer who sings with such passion, touching the hearts of all Nepali women, Paaina Khabara and Teej songs. Mera aama, hajuraamaharu sunerai runchan.

Padma (?) Bahadur Gurnung, who's been fighting for fairpay for the British Gurkha soldiers.

Deepak Gurung, Recently nominated by the NC to the Upper house (?)

There is some proffessor here in the USA at Mississippi State University, I have heard he is doing really well.

Usha Sherchan: Poet, a well stablished poet in the modern poetry scenario. She had had some of her poetry into recording as well.

Dr. Krishna Bhattachan (Usha Sherchan's Brother): Finished his PHD in Berkley and is very prominent in Sociology, specially in ethnic issues: A lot of focus on "Brahmanbaad"
Makardhoj Posted on 26-Jan-02 04:32 AM

appear in Amazon.com's I will never accept him as
Bidwan from Pokhara. So, lets wait for some more time.
I wonder whether that day will come.

Pokhareli Mitra Haru,

Do you have any Idea about following gentlemen:

1. Janak Raj Chalise
2. Ganesh Sherchan
3. Mr. ... Pun. Who was a good footballplayer
and later got job in Police because of his play
and I once got chance to ride Motor Bike
Pun-dai, he was so kind he left me at my own
home. He served Inspector Position for long
time and later died in Accident (I am not
sure whether the accident occured while
climbing Mountain, or in a AirPlane Crash.
He was Footbal Bidwan.

4. Mountain Climbing "Bidwan": The youngest
"Bidwan" from Pokhara. Mr. Arbind Timilsina.
He deserves salute. I wish I meet him one
day. I am so glad that I got chances to meet
at least once with most of the peoples whose
name appeared here. Not only the names
I wrote, but, the names written by others.

5. Hey any one from Kaski Kot, Kahu ko danda
and Sammi: Diabolic bhai ke chha line ma lagne
chance, ali badhi hard work garera line ma
lagnu paryo, I wish you are one of the many
candidates to be added in future list.

6. Any medical doctors? (from Pokhara)
Dr. Vaidya. He was surgeon in Patan
Hospital for long time. He did scissored my
stomach to a two pieces of "stones" from
my body. I like him. At that time he was
Number One surgeon in Nepal. When I wanted to
go for operation in Kathmandu Medical ... Clinic
in Tripureswor, he told me, Bhai yaha ta
paisa wal haru ko lagi ho, jaslai ramro single room
with TV chahincha, timilai ta Patan Hospital
ma jana sallaha garchu. I asked him, what about
quality of service. He replied Jaha gare pani,
operation garne ta maile nai ho, kina yaha
paisa kharcha garchou, Patan hospital ma sasto
chha. Khali common room ma basnu parcha.
He was so generous person. My experience.

7. Dr. Yadav Lal Vaidya: Once director general
at Department of Irrigation. He is elder bro.
of Dr. vaidya mentioned in Number 6. He used
to my boss when I was working in DOI for
sometime, and thanks to him for suggesting me
to resign from the "Permanent" Position that
I just got, and now, I am happy with his advice,
at least, I did not occupy a position for long time
before my name appeared in Gorkhapatra
"Hajir hun aune suchana" (long time gayel bhai),
and Jagir bata nikaliyeko suchana. At least, that
could be a Kalo dag in my CV, and I would not
be able to criticize others who leave nepal on
study leave / no pay leave / suddenly vanished
for years, as many do such things and they
never bother, while sought on others doing it.
"Boss hunu parcha yasto", give a good suggestion.
Thats lasting and memorable, keep your CV
clean. I am not sure what peoples write in their
CV, when they are kicked out of position because
of long time "Gayel". Specially in Japan, you have
to right every details, even a month why your
CV has missing date when you are trying for some
scholarship / fellowship / govt. jobs. They might
right "resigned", as I do write with "Proud", and they
surely suffer mental problem while lie-ing in CV, if
found they will be jailed for the lie, or deported.
Thanks to Dr. Vaidya Bros. They are really great.

7. Bidwan lawyers?

8. Bidwan Journalists. Don't bring the name of
that Kantipur Pub.'s agent in Pokhara. He is not
a good journalist, he is propagandoist.

9. Bidwan Agricultural Specialist.

10. Poets

11. Bidwan Computer Programmer. I know one working in Meghasis.

12. Anyone remember the fellow who made a special Antenna
and made a news in TKP.

13. Historian: Have you ever read any history of Kaski-Pokhara
written by Pokhareli People.

14. Writer: Book and Fiction writers if any.

15. Who brought the idea of Gandaki Hospital?

16. Who brought the idea of first airport. I heard they just
cleaned stones and let plane land. what a great days they
had. How excited peoples were ? When I was a kid, during
Khampa war, I could enter inside the plane and play between
the landed and before take off. The security check was increased
only when Girija and Associates hijacked the plane. We had
such glorious day. Now, time has come, Taxi driver might need to
check your body for his security.

Pokhareli Mitra Haru, Part II of previous posting.

17. Lets not forget Uttam Pun, though he had controversial
adult hood, and also controversial life during his Pradhan
Panch of Pokhara NP. Now, being head of the Nepal
Industrial Bank, Many pokharelis can get loan very easily,
may be one reason is he knows how to recover his money
from Pokhareli, and Pokhareli also know him very well that
they can "pachaune" his bank's loan. Last time when I
was accompanying someone going there for loan, the
customer said, once there was an employee who
tried to make a deliberate delay, like in govt. office,
indirectly trying to ask for undertable money. Uttam-dai
called him in his office room along with his all employees
too, and told "Do you want to resign?", or I kick you out
and make not your life miserable, "bhabisya ko lagi
ayogya thaharine gari". Then, the employee resigned,
and others got a great knowledge that this bank is
not a place to get undertable money or delay work.
So, the person with home I went, got his loan in
one hour, it was Rs. 25lakhs "floating" loan. A loan
designed for biz. peoples who need money for only
a couple of days, and they pay the interest only
for the days you with draw it from bank. Thus, many
peoples can routinely withdraw and deposit. Its a
different than Krishi Bank or Nepal Bank had . Thus,
biz. peoples don't have to pay for round the air
interest while money was deposited in their account.
This was the reason for many Krishan lost their
lands even without using a paisa. So, some biz.
peoples in this forum if you are interested, you
can get such loans from many Private Banks. Lets
promote Pokhareli Banks: Nepal Industrial Bank
(major share owned by Uttam Pun), and another
Machhapuchre Bank (owned by Uttam-dai 's rival
Sitaram-dai). Machhapuchre is going to have its
branch in KTM very soon. Recently, Nepal Rastra
Bank introduced a rule that if a Bank does not
have 1 billion rupees as total puji, they can not
have branch in Kathmandu valley. So, Sitaram-dai
will be going to put 10crore additional (just informal info), and
30%share will be floated in Market, so if you are
interested be ready to get Machapuchre's share.
Do you rememeber Himalayn Bank 's scandal, they
used 6month free without paying interest and
bonus from thousands of peoples and returned
later just the deposited money. That was the
worst cheating in Private Bank, NRB was just
watching. If it was developed country, the owner
of HBL would have been jailed.

Hahoo Dai, aanfu ta fucche nai pariyo, aruko geet gaaundaima thikka cha. Maybe in 10 years, I might be worth mentioning.

Rama Parajuli (she is married to Prayush Onta), she is from Pokhara, she is (top) journalist for Kantipur Publication. Heard about her marriage, where her family did not approve, jaaat namilera. I hope everything is well now.

Rajendra Acharya, he is a newscaster at NepalTV.

Biswo Shakya (Zenith), he is not just a good photographer, but a very good humorous peot.

Sukraraj Sharma, I had never met him before (according to my recollection) and the last time I met him, he said "Oi Naati kta K cha tero haalkhabar, amreeka kahile farkinchas". I felt that Pokhreli warmth when he said that then I later found, he was related. Sukraraj is a prominent NC politician.

Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, he is into law, I see his writings on Kantipur once in a while. Haahoo dai might know more about him.
KeBhanam Posted on 26-Jan-02 01:17 PM

Tara Nath Ranabhat: you agree or disagree with his ideas and ways of handling cases, he is one of the prominent politician.

Bishwa Shankar Palikhe: Secretary of the National Sports Council. May be he went up there through connections, but he has been staying there.

Bikal Shershan: I hear he has done well in private school system in Pokhara.
HahooGuru Posted on 26-Jan-02 01:21 PM

Kannnani Dada ka "Mohan Khalak".

I guess Dr. Anand Mohan is from Kannnani Dada ka "Mohan Khalak".
He might be related to the "..." Mohan who was once candidate
for Rastriya Panchayat ko Member, and I remember him
meeting in Chunab Prachar, Bichara, his Chunab Chinna was
"Monkey" and we joked with him "kaka, tapai ko chunab chinna
change garnu paryo, Badar "LAKHU" lai pani kasai le bhot dela".
He was really disappointed with the Chunab chinna, "ali ali
bhot aune bhe pani, Lakhu Bhaka le Jane Bho". So, I think
there should be more Bidwans from "Mohan" Khalak. Pl.
try to drill those names. What about Bhadardhik ka
"Bhadari Haru?". Do you know any one?

I think there should be some Ex-British and Indian Gurkha
Army Men, who served and got a lot of recognition.

I am not sure current state of Dhasha, "Gopal Gurung ko Bau"
(it was the nickname when Gopal used to be mine classmate).
He was one of the most recognized Ex.armymen in Pension
Camp, Ram Bazar.

HahooGuru
PS: Non. Pokhareli bashis should not mind Diabolic and HahooGuru's
to-n-fro discussions. We are trying to pull more names as documentation
of our Pokhareli Bidwans. Please, be passssssssssssience. We know
we have to stop, when our brain ejects all the names.

Isn't this link about Bidwaan from Pokhara??? Well now I see people start listing "arae khaire nathu jhaire" all. Kasto hola....btw, since everybody start listing someone well known from Pokhara, I think why not I do the same. :-) I know someone from Pokhar who is going to be CEO of one of the fortune 500 companies. He went to Gandaki Boarding, got board second in I. SC from Ascol ,went to IIT(Electrical Engineering), worked couple years in India and States, did his MBA from Wharton. Now he is working somewhere in Seattle. And the guy is under 30 years old. May be sometimes he frequent this site...I don't know. Anyway he is one of my role models.

Bishwa Shankar Palikhe:

Thanks to Palikhe family who ran the Book stores
when there were no other Bookstores in the town.
"Palike kaha kitab aye re, bhani ham jab gurururururur
dagurera school ko Book list liyera jane garthou".
Palikhe Khalak has great contributions in providing
books and stationaries to we pokharelis before mushroomed
stationary stores started.

Diabolic,

I am glad that u mentioned the name of Rajendra Dev Acharya of NTV. But how come u forgot to mention his two brothers. Dr. Upendra Dev Acharya (Environmental Law), who is currently working for Federal Gov. as Senior Attorney in Montana .
Sujan Posted on 28-Jan-02 09:29 PM

How about a Fulbright Scholar from Pokhara? My dad was the recipient of it in the late 1970's, the only one to receive it from Nepal that year. He also built the Pokhara airport's first two-way communication tower, not that it really matters now. I dont' think much has changed even since then.

Durcheruwa,

Do you mind disclosing this mystery person? That's quiet an achievement he has racked up there. As far as I know Wharton MBA hopefuls must have at least several years of real world experience in a respected company before applying. And now you say he's launched to become a fortune 500 CEO is even more interesting...

Can anyone else confirm this?

-Sujan
Diabolic Posted on 29-Jan-02 12:05 AM

Durcheruwa: Although I have met Rajendra Acharya (NTV) several times, never knew about his brother. Good, that you pointed out.

Sujan: Please do let us know your fathers name.

One other person I could think of was Dr. Krishna Raj Regmi: He is one of the Scientist who has been working with Pakharibas Project in Dhankuta (forgot the exact name). He has developed some kind of seeds (wheat or rice) through his research. He was the Director of the project after the British handed it over to the Nepal Government.

Dr. Ramji Pandit is a Mathematician, I do not have more information on him. I think his brother is a medical doctor (dautar in pokhreli lingo).

Dr. Anand Mohan Bhattarai is from the Mohan family of Kandani Danda, I see his future to be promising.
