George Bernard Shaw once said: Cricket is played by stupids, and watched by more stupid people. The result of the games in U19 gives the reason for that. In U19 World Cup Cricket, Nepal lost narrowly with England. And later, was unable to be selected for second round. The irony of the match is :if Nepal had lost to England by huge margin, it could have entered the super league. Because in that case, Nepal and Pakistan both would have 9 points, but since Nepal beat Pakistan, it could enter second round. A report from official website of U19 World Cup Cricket says this all. Anyway, guys played good, it seems. Wish them good luck. Nepal close, but undone by their own denial of a bonus point Lynn McConnell - 25 January 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nepal went into their game today with Papua New Guinea knowing they had an outside chance of qualifying for the Super League but in the end they were just short of gaining their goal. In the final analysis the net run rates told the story: England 0.820, Pakistan 0.806, Nepal 0.387. In one of the cruel ironies of the bonus point system, had Nepal not denied England a bonus point in their match, Nepal would have headed off Pakistan for a Super League place. Because the decision on who would have advanced to join England, would have been first based on head-to-head results and Nepal would have qualified by virtue of their win over Pakistan. They would have been disappointed to have have been dismissed by PNG for 177 runs in the 49th over. None of the Nepalese batsmen made a big score, with Yashwant Subedi's 34 being the highest score, and even then off 73 balls. Captain Binod Kumar Das scored 23 off 21 balls but it was too little too late for Nepal. Christopher Amini was the pick of the PNG bowlers with his three for 31 off his 10 overs. PNG made a good start to their bid to surpass Pakistan's score with Mahuta Dai scoring 32 off 35 balls and Frank Joseph 15 off 38 as 49 were posted for the first wicket. But as soon as the first wicket fell, there was a steady procession as all 10 wickets fell for 63 runs. Lakpha Lama's left-arm bowling undid the PNG players as he took four for 14 from 10 overs while Basanta Regmi, also a left-armer, took two for 17 from eight overs. Shakh Gauchan continued the problems created by the left-armers

goes on to show sometimes losing is winning... the rules as such are stupid because it penalizes better performance. But Nepal can't be complaining about it, because the same rule would have applied for everybody. Kinda like Raiders bitching about the fumble/incomplete pass rule. What if it was Gannon and not Brady? I'm sure the Raiders would have been happy and would fully understand the rule and Gruden would have "gone to his grave happy". Also Nepal didn't really demonstrate sports savvy/ good strategy then. If they could have qualified for the next round by losing by a wide margin, how hard was it toss them English some lollipops. But it goes deeper than that. Is the purpose of any sports to perform at your best and play in true spirit of sportsmanship? Or win championships?

>If they could have qualified for the next round by losing by a wide margin, how >hard was it toss them English some lollipops Oh, we had to play our first game with England, not the last one! I was just making a remark about our just missed chances. In deed, the best game is always the one played with honesty, and Cricket, more than any other game now, is in need of honest players.

Ok. I still cannot understand how loss by a higher margin would've given us favorable results. Or what "bonus point" is? If England had won by more runs, wouldn't they get more "bonus points", thereby dragging Nepal further down? But then can't argue with G B Shaw... Maybe the rules were made by U19 too :-)

Nevermind. i get it now. Points: 4 - Win 2 - Tie/No result 1 - Bonus point (for winning by a run rate of 1.25 times faster than the opposition) Teams separated by: Most points Most wins Head-to-head results Most bonus points Net Run Rate
