One of my friends from Nepal just finished his MBBS from India and I think he is doing his internship right now. He wants to study more in his field(medicine). He told me he is more interested in research. I have no idea, what to tell him.....

Is he intelligent? Can he afford his education here in the US? If both answered "YES" then definately you should say don't be late to apply. Good luck to your friend.

The way into getting into the medical education in US is a bit more difficult and complicated for a medical graduate from Nepal. After completing the internship one can appear for the exam called USMLE ( United states medical licencing examination). Now it is possible to appear in this examination at kathmandu itself but mind you this examination is very expensive and moderately difficult and the third part should be taken in US . If some one passes this examination then he can work in US as a resident .
Ïf your friend is interested in research, the other way into getting into US medical research education is to apply for masters degree in the desired field and study up to PHD . This type of education doesnot require medical license and one can easily get into the research in basic medical sciences if one is a bit more labourious and clever. In fact research oppurtunity is vast in US . The only drawback of this type of education is you have to be away from patients and these degrees are of no use back at nepal to work as a especialist doctor.
