I am surprised at the increasing press coverage of Miss World/Universe
competition, and magnificance of its significance in Nepal and
especially in India. It is so sickening our Indian classmates
and Indian newspapers mentioning it proudly as if they have won
Nobel Prize.More than that, I have recently read a report in
some Nepalese newspapers bemoaning the unsuccessful participation
of Nepalese models there.

Well, let's talk about the just concluded Miss World competition.
This is absolutely nothing, and whatever its name denotes,it is
no more than saying the 'first' boy in a local liberal college who
scores highest mark in Physics the best brain of Physics in the
world because the liberal college has students from 95 countries.
If GBNC has some dollars tomorrow,it can organize "Miss Earth"
competition in Boston, and it is prefectly legal.

Once called cattle-market stigma, the miss world competition
was established in 1951 by London impresario Eric Morley, with
the clarification that "this competition is just a bit of fun,
not to be taken seriously" to be a part of Festival of Britain.
Feminists have been waging battle against it terming it as
degrading and demeaning.(Morley died in this year before the
competition).Julia, the wife of Eric, still says this competition
is just a fun.Due to rise of political correctness in popular
perception, the London bookers have recorded sharp decline in
the wagering of Miss World in this decade.

The opportunism of the organizers is evident:the Indians won the
title only once(Miss world Reita Faria,1966) before they
liberalized their economy.With the liberalization,Indians
have been considered one of the fast growing markets in the world.
Imagine one obscure company in London has now a billion loyal
fans in India waiting every year the competition, and it is also
obvious that Indians like the competition because the models
from India win the competition! This year, the so called Miss World
replied the final question incorrectly, still she was crowned the
miss world title.(She said among living woman,Mother Teresa is
her ideal.MOther Teresa died a few years ago.)A small company
like the miss world organizer won't lose the profit from TV rights
etc by not giving the prize to Indians.Indians has consistently
made to finalists since Susmita Sen won the prize some years ago.

I will not be surprised if a Chinese model win miss world(they
don't participate in the competition) soon after China starts
participating! Another one billion audience is a coveting aspect
for every company!!!

Dear Biswo ji,

I agree with your opinion

BUT I'm definitely not against Miss GBNC show.
Biswo Posted on 19-Dec-00 01:55 PM

Hi SJP:

The crux of my article is not in my being against any particular
show, but against the kind of publicity being given to it.

Like you, I am not against a particular show at a particular time
and place. But this is not something for which we should be proud
of that much.I take it as a normal pheonomenon, or just as a fun.

But ,as you can recall, there was an incident like this:

After winning miss Nepal competition, our beautiful Miss Nepal
Rubi Rana was asked :

"What will you do after this?"(add: after this huge achievement?)

She replied:"I will do this thing, and that thing,.."I mean you
can guess, a bit of social service, book writing etc..

(She ended up like a normal Nepalese lady, marrying an army personnel, I have heard from one Birgunj resident friend. She
is doing nothing special,as long as I know.)

I think the mistake is not her, it is the publicity, the
expectation being bestowed to the competitors & the victors.Let's
take it as a pure fun, a fun that some feminists don't like, and
probably justifiably.

Please have a fun in the show!

Dear Biswo Ji,

I understand what you are trying to say and I totally agree with
that. I don't know how good social workers these beauty queens are or can be but I'm pretty sure they make a lot money; specially the organizers. I think Money ( my teacher in nepal used to call " THAN THAN GOPAL) is the most important and the only incentive for the organizers to organize these kind of events.
Biswo Posted on 19-Dec-00 02:47 PM

Hi SJP ji:

I also agree.

And,hey, your teacher must be very funny person, huh?

Namaste Bishwoji,

C'mon, Chinese girls are pretty! I wouldn't find it surprising if they start becoming miss world. Tamen Hen piaoliang, shi bu shi! :-)

Hi Trailokyaji:

You strike the chord, man.

I tried to tell so many people here that Chinese, esp
Shanghainese,girls are very beautiful,but hey nobody believed!You
visited Shanghai,so you belong to a small group of believers now!

By the way, What I meant by the sentence was not that Chinese
are not pretty, but Chinese will be given prize because 1.3
billion costumers of huge China market will be very attractive
clientele for a little known British Company, and to gain the customer
base there, the best way is to give prize to local participants.

You know very few people used to talk about Miss World/Universe
thing in India until somebody from India actually brought title
home.(We Nepalese are different,we just adopt other's culture.)
Same thing can be expected in China. And I am pretty much sure,
to provide stimulus for popularity, the organizers will give prize
to the first Chinese participant.

Take it easy,Trailokyaji.Looks like ni sinian le ni de nupengyu,
she bu she?
Sweeti Posted on 24-Dec-00 12:22 AM

At least the indians win somethings. You guys I am mean Nepalese never even go in the top ten. No body plays cricket dont even a have a men's team duh! There is a saying which applies to all you nepalese "jinke ghar seshe ke hon wo dusaron par pathar pheka nahin karte". Have peace guys in your minds and always remember everyone is a human being and we all belong to one race. So stop discriminating. OK
Trailokya Aryal Posted on 24-Dec-00 01:01 AM

Dear Sweeti,

Nobody's discriminating against any particular race/group/citizens here. I guess, you didn't read the messsage(s) carefully.

And, on nepal not having its cricket team, India doesn''t have its Basketball team! which makes everything even, I guess.

Plus, I didn't really understand yoiur hindi dialouge, would you mind translating it either in Nepali or in English?

Hi Sweety:

Though I didn't understand your Hindi proverb, I have one
answer to your curiosity. There were some instances when Nepalese
girls brought home trophy from such beauty contests. One girl
was Miss University in Phillippines last year, and Rauniyar
sisters were crowned some kind of trophies in Seoul some years
ago.For me,it is same whether you win the so called Miss World
or Miss Pacific, it is only name, as I wrote in the first posting,
if GBNC organizes a contest tomorrow in the name of "Miss Planet"
or "Miss Earth" , it is perfectly legal. You can't say that Miss
World is really Miss World and the competition is some kind of
"World Cup" as you say in Cricket or Football(Soccer).
dumdum Posted on 24-Dec-00 03:34 AM

After reading Sweety's comment, I first wondered why she lumped
together Cricket and Beauty contest so insolently, and then
thought awhile.She was correct.

The way Indians play cricket, and the way Priyanka Chopra won the
Miss World title this year, one thing is surely common in both:
both are/were fixed. There lies the pride of our southern friends!

Thanks god, Nepal doesn't play World Cup Cricket ,otherwise we
will end up watching fixed games.A generation of Indians wasted
their time watching fixed games of Kapil Dev, Gawaskar ,Azhar and
who knows who are still unidentified..
SJP Posted on 24-Dec-00 09:56 AM

Miss Sweeti,

Your comment is totally irrelevant to the topic.
Sweeti Posted on 24-Dec-00 08:00 PM

Folks

Thank you all for your be it good or bad. But I was just trying to bring in the issue of why we are so much apart the nepali the Indians even though we share the same culture religion and so many other things. Why we think of each other so differently? IF an Indian girl wins something or some title and India comes to be known around the world then its just not India but the whole Asian continents which is down graded before the Euro race. We all should be proud. The reason why we are lacking behind is because we look for differences in eachother and dont work together. And I believe every women is pretty in her own way but may be Indian girls who participates(who is choosen from 2nd populated country of the world i may not be accurate) has something special which people spot and thats the reason why they are crowned.
Biswo Posted on 24-Dec-00 10:02 PM

Hi Sweety:

You are misunderstanding us again and again, and probably
misrepresenting yourself repeatedly here also.We have no anger
against any particular race/citizen/people.I respect the faculty
of Professor CB Raman, Khurana, Amartya Sen etc people. What I
wanted to point out is the erroneous representation of Indians
by Indians themselves. For example:professor Amartya Sen ,when he
got Nobel prize, got coverage for only a few days in Times of
india, but Priyanka Chopra is getting such a huge welcome, such an
incessant coverage in Times of India(just for example) that I felt
obliged to point out that they are wrong in doing that!

And if such publications were confined to India only, that was
perfectly fine for me.But,I had a lot of Indian friends here who
keep on harping that India has Miss World Trophy, Miss Universe
Trophy, Miss Asia Pacific Trophy, Mrs World Trophy and I don't
know how many more name they know! Also I found that a lot of
Nepalese have the same problem as I have. My article was just a response,
that the competition is just a cattle market stigma.A lot of
gentleman even don't care about that! And what the faculty those
girls have? I don't see any.Take Susmita Sen as example, she
couldn't even compete with other girls in Bollywood stardom!

With such a coverage and sanctifying of that 'miss world'
competition,Indians are making a blunder.A lot of middle class
girls are now dreaming of becoming Miss World. And for your
information, the competition is still not institutionalized, the
organizers doesn't even seem to have their own efficient website,
(www.terra.com/missworld was the official site ,but it no longer
works, I guess),and what if Julia Morley's company becomes
bankrupt tomorrow and no longer organizes such competition? What
will be the dreams of those thousands of girls?

As for sharing similar culture, a lot of Indians start by saying
"you guys don't even make to top 10" & "you guys don't even have
a men's cricket team" ,and finally, they offer carrots like this!
I think we do share culture, but we do share some bitterness also,
at least politically.Citizens from India like you can contribute
a lot to make the relation better!

Wish you happy holiday.
