This is from today's issue of Doctor Ebiz.. === While Netscape Communicator, Outlook Express, Outlook 98/2000, and Eudora are good for personal e-mail communications, they are not made for bulk mailings such as opt-in newsletters. (Note: Bulk e-mail does not equal spam, which is unsolicited commercial e-mail.) For newsletters of any size you'll need a listserver that will send out the messages as well as handle subscriptions, unsubscriptions, and bounces. The From and Reply-to fields can be set to any address you like. Listservers come in two flavors -- desktop programs and Web-interface hosted applications (ASPs). Two good desktop programs for PCs are Infacta Group Mail (www.infacta.com) and the more complex Gammadyne Mailer (http://gammadyne.com/mmail.htm). For Macintosh consider MaxBulk Mailer (http://www.maxprog.com/MaxBulk.html). A great, free, advertising-supported listserver is available from Yahoo! Groups (www.yahoogroups.com). Among ASPs, also consider Topica Email Publisher (www.topica.com/tep) and bCentral List Builder (www.bcentral.com/products/lb/default.asp?lid=295). I use SparkList's Lyris (http://www.sparklist.com) for my newsletter lists.
