The Chinese Movie Festival, held last week in Kathmandu, was a smashing success in terms of the number of people who came to watch the five movies, and in terms of the press coverage. Altogether an estimated total of 1,250 guests showed up. And so, the hall at the Russian Cultural Center was packed to the walls during each of the 5 shows. Three innovations that six of us, as volunteers, tried, and we think could be replicated in future either by us or by other similar groups: a) partnering with a related cultural organization (Mr. Deepak Sarka's World Cultural Net, in this case, which has a strong collection of Chinese movies). b) getting some members of the private sector involved: Shashi's Holidays and Furniture Land picked up a big chunk of our brochure expenses. And Trans Himalaya Byapar Sangh paid for the hall ko rental expenses. c) directly involving the concerned Embassy for the inauguration and related expenses (in this case, the Chinese Embassy) Tickets were all free -- this time. I am posting this here to share this knowledge and because for future shows, and for similar events in Kathmandu, a mix of private sector participation and cultural centers' and embassies' partnership -- together with priced or unpriced tickets -- could be used to make the film festivals all the more financially viable and logistically do-able with minimum of efforts and input. In this case, a very special thanks to Trailokya Aryal, Surendra Sthapit, Sandhya Rajkarnicar, Neeraj Nepali, and Deepak Sarkar and Bhaskar Gautam for all their hard work to make this festival a smashing success. A very happy Chinese New Year of the Horse to you all. oohi ashu for volunteer-run Kathmandu Film Archive
