There’s another addition to the long list of people who have lied about their educational qualifications to get a job. Popular singer Ram Krishna Dhakal, an assistant fourth class officer at Radio Nepal, had submitted a certificate claiming that he had passed out from a Sanskrit school in Bihar. The singer resigned from Radio Nepal after he learnt that the Centre for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) was preparing to file a case against him. In accordance with a CIAA directive, Radio Nepal has not accepted Dhakal’s resignation. Dhakal submitted a certificate from the Bihar-based Sharada Sadan Sanskrit Secondary School, but according to a CIAA source, the Bihar Sanskrit Education Board has certified that Dhakal’s papers are false. Once the certificate was established as fake, the CIAA directed Dhakal, under the Corruption Control Act, to pay bail of Rs 60,000, the sum equivalent to a possible six-year imprisonment. Despite a CIAA summons last month, the singer has not presented himself at the centre.

Most people do not want to talk about the fake certificates because they themselves, their parents, natedars and their teachers may have used this easy shortcut to success. Come on, if you want to be sincere to your country, to your people and most importantly to yourself, do reveal us what you know about the fake certificates. Having a fake certificate is like a time bomb ticking!!

I have heard stories of people who have used fake certificates to practice medicine, which seems like the scariest thing. But others who don't necessarily hold your life in their hands stil shoudl not be allowed to get away with it. I think there are lots of folks in Nepal who have fake certificates and who have climbed the career ladder that way. Of course that speaks to the inadequacy of our education system. But that is no excuse to cheat and mislead.

I think the US embassy in KTM kind of figured out that there were a lot of fake certificates goign through, but I don't think they have cracked down as hard as they could have in the past. Maybe it is different now.

Personally I find it dispicable. While recognizign how screwed our society is in terms of the value we put on being "educated" and yet have a system that is clearly biased towards particular groups, I think this fake certificate business need to come to an end and those who have used it to become part of public offices shoudl be stripped of their position. For those practicing medicine with fake sertificates, well they need to be publically exposed, jailed, their property and all assets seized, like wise for those whose deception puts the public in danger. But if an adminstrator or a clerk somewhere who has been doing their job satisfactrily even with a fake certificate, well maybe we can be more linient with them, since it is possible that the position does not require the sort of formal education, but rather self-study, learnign on the job is sufficient!

Well anyhow......
