Does anybody know about Lightweight Directory Access ProtocolP? I am trying to find out what needs to be done to make a product compatible to LDAP. If you are knowledgeable in this field, can you drop me a line? Thanks.

Does anybody know about Lightweight Directory Access ProtocolP?

I do have little bit knowledge aobut LDAP. It is basically a access protocol,once used as front end to access X.500 kind of directory,hence the name DAP came out.
As X.500 was a heavy weight protocol and was depenedent upon the ISO network standard contrast to TCP it never became so popular.So LDAP which was just a front end once upon a time became a full fledged backend and front end.

I don't know what kind of capability you want to add in your product. LDAP is heavily used in authentication and authorization and also in scenrios where you have implement where system has less "writes" and large no of "READS".

There are several implementation of it
1 alot of AppServer had this built in JNDI provider(Bea Weblogic,jboss etc.) they are basically responsible to store java object

2. iPlanet had one of the most robust Directory Server.
3. Open Source provide its own kind of LDAP implemntation you can see at www.openldap.org
4. If you are coming from Windows enviroment you may look for ADSI . Now a days Oracle also provide its own directory server.
5. Novell also provides NDS.

In java land basically people use JNDI or iPlanet Acees API or JLDAP to access LDAP
There are C/C++ API available.
I don't know about ADSI and rest.
