Great, Folks going to DC in July will surely enjoy the momo. However, the first thing here is: have you contributed Sajha.com towards the cost of maintaining this site? If yes, your momo are tasty, if not, shame on you, they are sour.
PG Posted on 19-Feb-02 03:45 PM

There's a popular proverb "Bolyo ki polyo".

Sounds like this GNBC and Sajha.com really going after money.

Dear Gandhi...just like our friend PG posted his opinion and the Nepalese proverb, here's another one that fits just your name......"Majboori ka doosra naam Mahatma Gandhi"......dear Gandhi...just like PG posted on his note..you are really after money....it hasn't been even an hour we posted our note....and there you are.......If we had the money, we definitely wouldn't have visited this site nor would have taken refuge in it......but thanks for your concern, once we start making some dough....definitely Sajha.com will taste the "achar"..So, Gandhi, how does this sound to ya my friend ?
Gandhi Posted on 19-Feb-02 07:05 PM

That's nice. When I come to DC, I will definately visit your restaurant to have them.
_BP Posted on 19-Feb-02 07:20 PM

Hey, how broad an area do you guys serve? How about some momocha's this-a-way in the west coast? It is unfair to talk about your juicy momo's when you know their are people on this site from out-of-reach areas. Can you Fed-Ex the momos?
Sangey Posted on 19-Feb-02 09:05 PM

Holy Guacamole,

Momo... on demand... at doorstep. Quick, somebody get me a bucket 'cause my mouth is watering like Koshi in monsoon.

I am jealous of SMSainju, Sunakhari, Mins and others who are in MD/DC/VA area.

Here we have two enterprising Nepali youths who have ventured out to carve a niche for themselves in the food catering business. And what a good start with exotic, delicious momo delivery idea. Definitely there is an untapped market for this service and that's just looking at 2000 Nepalis living in that region. We don't see this kind of entrepreneur spirit often enough among our Nepali folks here in Bidesh. Today it's DC metro area, maybe tomorrow it expand to NY, Boston, Toronto, LA(_BP will be happy).

Here's to you guys, wishing you the very best.

Sangey.

ps - I did see a previous -ve posting and it upsets me. C'mon friends, let's encourage our fellow Nepalis in their quest for success rather than burdening them with sour comments right from the outset. You've heard of that story where Nepali frogs could not escape from a container because each was pulling other's legs, haven't you?

Gandhi,
I so hope that you are joking when you ask whether the momo guys have contributed money for the maintainance of this website. If you are not, then I guess you need a repartee:-)
Throwing sour momos at gandhi's TALU, I want to ask how much Gandhi is contributing to sajha.com to get his/her stupid ( hell ya, I think so) comments posted here. Negative..right, so shut the hell up, and let those aspiring entepreneurs use this public website where they can make the DCbasi happier with home-taste MOMOS.
PS: I have inkling that this gandhi is a vegetarian. hey, if you are, I am gonna throw Saag at you, you little gun!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to hear about momo catering service in DC. Does Centreville, VA fall under your delivery area?

Gandhi Posted on 20-Feb-02 10:05 AM

Hi Momocha and other concerned:

I reviewed my comments last night and found that it was irrational of me to put such comments at once. I am sorry for putting such harsh, negative comments about a newly emerging business, though I WROTE IT AS A JOKE. Wrong choice of words sparkled much negative sense out of my writing. I have nothing against your business, I love momo too much and I am still serious to visit your restaurant if I ever come to DC.

We all learn doing something right or something wrong. Let's take this an opportunity to learn a lession. We may avoid such situations in future by:

1. Being indifferent to any business postings about their origin, location and relevancy as a visitor of this site. We are not here to judge the advertisements.

2. Not posting any business advertisement in kurakani section - there is seperate classified section here any one can post free or paid.

3. Being impersonal about the site maintainance. So far as the site administrator gets his/her way, we can enjoy visiting the site, read and post sensible/nonsense stuffs so far as site is running. He/she will sought out ways for himself/herself.
("Can't disclose, I have not paid anything towards the maintainance of this site, to date, I am tresspassing this forum). May be the administrator can publish not for profit but for maintainance only rates for business advertisement and membership fee for visitors. That way any business can have their permanent banner as a sponsor and a regular source of income from its visitors to keep the site running.

4. Not relating any posting to "as the voice of GBNC or Sajha.com": The site is visited by many people around the world and one can post from anywhere. For example, I am just one of the visitors of Sajha.com, not even eligible to be listed in GBNC member directory as per its constitution. I am personally responsible for all of my previsous postings (I dont' know if I can still enjoy free ride to continue writing) and my voices are not of GBNC or Sajha.com.

Once again, I am sorry for being irrational yesterday.
dumpling Posted on 20-Feb-02 11:36 AM

How do they charge? any formula that invoves the distance of delivery, no of momo ordered, time, service charge, tips etc.

I was wondering if they can manage some system like those chinese guys in a van so that momo gets cooked on the way to delivery.

Can those guys come and prepare momo at the house or parties at request. The customers will get to eat momo of their taste.

Jealous of momo popularity

NK Posted on 20-Feb-02 12:56 PM

Gandhi, you aplogozid, fine. As jdv says it takes a big man to apologize. True. Nevertheless there was no need for your apology. It was said in jest. We can go back and see that all your past postings have been responsible. All you were asking in all appearance was, "hey guys, contribute" that was all.

It is not possible to be as polite as everybody likes to see (even their own postihg/battering are questionable). True some are more impolite than others in this board. But let's not give into the holier-than-thou, let's be the first-to-throw-stone attitude. Let's say what is in our mind and our heart without being too cautious. Too cautious takes us into the path of being too boring and too unreadable.

My two cents worth.

KOKO Posted on 20-Feb-02 01:24 PM

All you folks who are going off on Gandhi for no apparent reason.
Aren't these folk trying to make some dough selling momo ?
If you've been here long enough to know time is money.
If you are selfishly promoting your product to profit then be man enough to contribute to the source of this medium(website). He has had this site going without asking anyone for any money for a very long time. Because of the traffic he had to move it commercial host. Initially he shelled money out of his own pocket to keep it going. I feel its only fair to ask people who are profiting(financial) from this site to contribute at their own will. People who are pushing for phone cards(making money), selling momo(making money), Travel agents(making money) etc etc. For people looking for room-mates, trying to sell their TV(cause they are moving) they are not trying to profit, for them we have the classifieds. IF 1 person is trying to sell 10 tv's or 5 stereo's then he is definately profiting from it. And its only fair for him to contribute to the site for maintainence.
... Posted on 20-Feb-02 03:23 PM

It's amazing how people on this forum will start an argument over the smallest of things. This should be renamed the Greatest Bickering Nepali Community. If some Nepali wants to promote his small business here, let him do it for crying out loud - whether he can afford to contribute or not. At least support Nepali entrepreneurship.

At the same time San, you should consider selling more banner ads here so your efforts are paid off. Those who are serious about promoting their businesses would be smart to make use of such ads. Those who don't want to use them can stick to the classifieds or to a thread such as this one - and be forgotten in a few days.

Hi San and JDV,

Next time you come to DC, MOMO is on me. You can have as much as you want or until you pig out.
Probably we can use the "MOMO on the run" in our Convention. Lets make a deal.

Puru ji, we should get together for MOMO Party... Mins, you are welcome to my place for momo party anytime. just let me know when you care to stop by.... Now we are talking. Momo party all the time...

Talking about momos, where in Kathmandu are you likely to get

the best
consistently ekdam mitho
finger-licking good
khatara
vabya
chwank
(commercially available)

momos?

a) Nanglo Bakeries?
b) Sumai in Teku?
c) Momo King in New Road or Putali Sadak or Baneswor?
d) Saandaar Momo or Try Again or Everest Momo chains?
e) Himalayan Java in Thamel?
f) The momo place in Maha Bauddha where they serve momos on leaf-plates?

f) Where?

Where do you -- gourmet of momos in Kathmandu or elsewhere -- like to go for your fill of delicious, steaming momos?

Please educate and inform.

That said, I am amused to find that many Indian-run 'samosa and chaat'
places in Kathmandu have diversified their offerings to include what else but
vegetarian momos.

Ashu, I remember there was a dingy little momo place in New Road, I think the place is called Pipal Bhot. The decor / atmosphere was nothing to do cartwheels about and the whole place could've done with a good cleaning, but heck, we didn't care - their C-momos were delicious. Wonder if that place is still around...

Having sampled the momos from the MOMO on the RUN, I can say that it's simply delicious. Far better than the drab fare at the Everest Resturaunt in downtown DC(but then that's not saying much). The 'acchar' could be a little hotter for my taste. .I hope 'On the Run' lasts although ,to be honest, I fear it won't.

MOMO on the Run will have some customer suge at the begining and then it will sorta die down, almost like Kozmo and others. If you are listening my friend, here's some suggestion:

1. Do Not Just Target Nepali's, Target a broader customer base-- this might be accomplished by providing a variety of momos, different meat as well different spice scale on achar.
2. Be consistent, don't try and change some dish because few people say so. Rather come up with a different name-- this way you can satisfy some of the customers suggestions.
3. Somebody alread mentioned this-- how about providing a MOMO party service. We call you in and you make FRESH momo for us-- you bring all the necessities, you wash your dishes, rest of the dishes to be done by the customer.
4. Try promoting-- if around college/offices, provide them great service during the lunch hour.

Here's my review of momos available back home:

Ashu asked, "Where in Kathmandu are you likely to get the best, consistently ekdam mitho, finger-licking good, khatara, vabya, chwank, (commercially available), momos?"

a) Nanglo Bakeries?

Definitely good. Daami chutny. If you like masala-wala momo, this is it. But could get pricy, especially with drinks and deserts added. But I feel ok to spend money there because they are providing employment to handicapped people and food/ambience is quite good. Try their sizzler too.

b) Sumai in Teku?

Those who are familiar with Japanese cuisine would know that Sumai actually means open momo with shrimp and vegetables inside, not meat. But let's not get tangled with semantics, Sumai definitely has good open momos with meat. Plus, their chicken chilli is mouth watering.

c) Momo King in New Road or Putali Sadak or Baneswor?

Opened by Mahendra "Honda" Shakya, Boston returnee, is definitely a good place if you want quick and reasonably priced momo.

d) Saandaar Momo or Try Again or Everest Momo chains?

Never been there.

e) Himalayan Java in Thamel?

Haven't had momo there, but they serve wicked good brownies. Plus, their balconey is good place to do people-watch. I like their interior layout, kinda lounge like with sofas. And the manager seems to be a friendly guy who treats his customers well.

f) The momo place in Maha Bauddha where they serve momos on leaf-plates?

Never been there.

As Suna suggested, New Dish is a good place, but only if you like Darjeeling style momo - non-masala kind. I personally prefer this taste and would recommend it to others as well. I wonder if Ktm ko New Dish is related to Darj ko New Dish.

If you do go to Kalimpong, they have the best momo that I know of. I know a dirty, dingy restaurant there owned by a gentleman named Deben, unfortunately I forgot the name of the place. It's on the way to DGH and Deolo. There you will get extremely delicious taato taato momo with dalle khursani ko achaar. Aatha aatha bhandai, phoo phoo phookdai, piro le shyuu shyuu gardai...

If you are in Darjeeling, ask around for Nini's momo. You will be in for a treat. Penang is also another renowned place for momo. And of course, almost all restaurants there serve it - Hasty Tasty, Amigo's, Caventeers, New Orient, etc.

As a momo connoiseour, I have to say that ones with pork is the best. But the best combination I have discovered is with 75% pork and 25% beef. Turkey momos are the worst, followed by chicken. And for chutney, I prefer dhaniya ko rather than just tamatar ko. But that's just my taste.

... la hera na... keyboard bhari ryaal jharecha...

New dish in KTm is the same as New Dish in Darj. Funnily though, most people in Darjeeling don't prefer New Dish for their momos...okay, that was like 10/15 years ago. I personally like Penangs but Nini aaji's used to be the langsa ones!

C momos are the same kind of momos that we eat. Its just that, those momos after they are boiled, are mixed in tomatoes and big chunks of green pepper and onion. Believe me when i say its spicy. There's a lot of chilli. So you'll need to drink lots of water with that.

lastly, its the best momo i've ever had till now and you get that only in Peepal. I think that was the name of the cafe.
