Since no one has taken initiatives to post messages on this group, i might as well write something on my favorite restaurant in town. Mike's Breakfast, just opposite the Police Headquarter is the best plce to eat out/hang out and meet friends in kathmandu. The restaurant mainly serves Mexican and American (foods that you probably ate at cafteria while in school), and also a litlle of this and that. I like their Indonesian Rice.. yummmy! its great! Plus, the envioronment is very lively, with indigo gallery just upstairs and expat commnity hanging in the garden, sipping beer/tequila/margerita or just some Mike's own home grown organic coffee. And its the only place in town where you can get artichok heart, and avacado on your sandwich. HIghly Reccomended! Pricee reasonable...even I can afford it.

Well IMHO (in my humble opinion) the best places to eat in Boston are (drum roll please) Kebab Factory in Harvard/Somerville--a skip and a jump from my house, and Bombay Club in Fanueil Hall. Mind you, the Bombay Club at Harvard Square doesn't really come up to the same standard of food (in my opinion, again) as the the one in Fanueil Hall. On top of the excellent food, the interior design and presentation give a wonderful ambience to Kebab Factory. It's always a pleasure to go there. It's got to be one of the best Indian restuarants that I've been to around the world in terms of service, appearance and food. I've been visiting those restuarants for a while and they rock!

my goodness! Mike's breakfast is still around? Seems like eons ago when we'd go there for hash-browns, sausages and eggs over easy after a hard night of partying. We used to love just sitting in the garden reading under an umbrella after breakfast. This was about 6-7 years ago, can't wait to get back and dig in to one of Mike's brunches!

Mike's breakfast used to be around Darbar Marga. Has the location changed?

The authentic (uncorropted) Newari Food Pasal in Bhaktapur. Fire cooked choila, traditionaly made kachila, bhatmaas sandheko, baara... and then some paanko ailaa. You sit on a sukkul on the 1st floor and eat the day away.

Would it be a breach of conduct if the restaurant mentioned here are somewhat pricey? I am just thinking about great food, great service..... Of course one does not go to these restaurants everyday but if one happens to have money that day then try these: Park St. number 9 for new American cuisine near public garden (patte is specially great) Che Henri for French near Harvard square ( i am not sure about the spelling of che righ now) Maison Robert for French -downtown Boston And don't ever go to Morton of Chicago (a steak house! i don't know what made me go there. oh wait! could be the gift certificate. after all there's such thing as 'free lunch.')Overblown, too many MBA's running around in suit spying your food or spying their own kind who knows. I wished they had more wait staff than onlookers in suit. Bombay Club. Yes, great price and good Indian food. Green papaya in Waltham. The best and the chepest Thai food. Try it at least once. You won't regret it. [i am trying to forget the world problem today the desparate situation in mid east, mao in Nepal, Andrea Yates, figure skater in little tu-tu dress...)

akriti, Mikes restaurant used to behind the building that housed Tansen (the restaurant, it was kind of awkward to get to. It'd moved to its new location (opposite the Police Headquarters)just as I was getting ready to move here. I'm pleasantly surprised its still around.

Dear curious-ji, Believe it or not, I was thinking of writing about jatra in the next thread under restaurant. Now that you have mentioned it, let me tell you (and others) about the place. Jatra is indeed a very nice place to be (I'm not saying this because I know the people who run it". The owners are nice, young, brilliant nepalis with innovative ideas and are always thee to talk with their customers, which makes jatra a great place to be especially on friday nights. I was there last friday, drinking beer [Jatra people, if you are reading this, get Carlseberg too, San Miguel matra kati khua-une??). Now, what makes jatra special beside the wonderful people who run it? Its a very difefrent restaurant. How? You'll experiencee it when you go there, sit on the radi (nepali rug/carpet) with your legs crossed (paleti marera)... sip beer/coffee or there own cocktails with suddha nepali names, and try to understand/see through Uttam nepali's abstract paintings. Believe me, when you are sipping San Miguel (and have some tato tato fried momo to go with it), all those abstract paintings start to make sense. You start to see hwat others don't.. and all of a sudden you start to appreciate art. They have a gift shop too! And dark room to develop your B&W rolls (to all you pros), and above all, they have a very nice selection of coffee. Whether youw ant Guatemalean/chilean/nepali/organic/swiss, you get it there. To be perfectly frank and honest, I haven't tried the other items in their menu except momo and sukuti (and I always get those when I am there, just ebcause they are so damn good).. What else...here's a news to you curious ji, there will be another jatra in town. Where/when.. let's keep it a suspence. Trailokya Aryal a regular jatra visitor

i really enjoyed downtown restaurant, which is (still, i hope) right in front of the united nations headquarters on the main pulchowk baato in harihar bhawan. i recommend the garlic or kabuli naan, palak paneer and/or chicken tikka masala, alum dum, and a cold plain soda to wash it down. nice folks, run by an st. xavier's alum. good prices and interesting mix of customers. mike's breakfast really went downhill, imo, once it moved from the lane just east of durbar marg to naxal (to be closer to the bikas wallahs?). indigo gallery is nice, but the service was so atrocious. wonder if they ever solved the bee/yellowjacket infestation. my wife and i went there once, and the bees were swarming so thickly around our plates that we couldn't take a single bite; so we complained to the managers. can you believe that they insisted we (we WERE regulars, past tense) PAY for our meals (didn't even offer to pack them to go--not that we'd want it after that). northfields in thamel is connected with mike's, menus virtually the same, nice service--though i really object to mike only allowing males to serve.

Mike's also has the best coffee in all of KTM. How do I know?? After hunting down for good coffee (& to the extent of taking coffee from abroad which ran out sooner than I expected!), Mike's was a blessing for coffee addicts like myself. Mike's has better coffee than Starbucks (if the liquid in starbucks can be called coffee). Cheers

I always wondered who would name a fast food restaurant 'wimpy.' Or, is there another meaning that i am missing. I beleive it is a part of chain resturant and one of them is in Delhi too.

my guess is that the "wimpy's" chain is named after the character "wimpy" in the cartoon popeye. wimpy was addicted to hamburgers and his famous line was: "i'd gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today."

In Kathmandu, I really liked Nanglo's sizzlers and momos. Jatra was good too although I went there just once last year. I forget all their names but there were a couple fo good places like Roadside Cafe and Maya etc that were really good in the Thamel of the early to mid ninetees. Some of my other favorites - Kebab Factory on Beacon Street for Indian, Naked Fish in Fanuel Hall for Cuban, Anna's Tequira (Porter) and Ole (Inman) for Mexican, Roka (Harvard) for Japanese, S&S (Inman) for American, Ajanta (Galleria Mall) for more Indian, Udupi (Framingham) for South Indian, Elephan Walk (Porter) for French and Cambodian. Also , -Siam City on Mass Ave near Prudential for Thai. -Sydneys Grill at the University Park Hotel in Central square has some great appetizers like Loster and chicken rolls. -New Asia in Harvard Sq for Chinese -Forget the name, but this really good Thai-japanese palce on Main Street, Hyannis Man all this atlk about food is making me hungry - I'm off to dinner.
