Encounter going on at Salyan, communications off

KATHMANDU, Feb 22 – Latest information available to Kantipur Online reveals that there is a fierce gun battle going on between policemen and Maoist terrorists at Sitalpatti area police office on the way to the district headquarters of Salyan district late Thursday night. There is no army barrack for support near the encounter area.
Communications with the police office, that has a strength of 60 policemen, have been cut off since 11: 35 p.m. The information was confirmed from a reliable source at the Police Headquarters in Kathmandu at around 12: 15 a.m.
Further information on any casualties could not be obtained at the time of filing this report.
It is also suspected that the Maoists might be trying to divert military concentration from the western Achham district. (sjs)
