February, the 17th. A couple of hours after I read the news about the siege in Achham, I called my friend in Lyon University to see if everything was ok at his home. He sounded disturbed and was sad he had not been able to find the whereabouts of another friend of ours whose brother and father had a shop very near Safebagar airport. "I am prepared for the worst", he said. He told me how the raids nearby his home had compelled him to switch from worrying about Nepal to worrying about his family. Of the location of his house, he only said, with a falling tone, "it was very near from the army camp." Perhaps at the same time, kiths and kin of army and police officers, who knew their loved one(s) had been transferred to Achham, were expecting a miracle to happen-to have their 'man' alive. Perhaps at the same time, Maoist leaders were rejoicing over their success-one that they possibly never expected to be blessed with. Perhaps at the same time, the jumbo cabinet was meeting in Baluwatar 'to decide to intensify army operation and cordon'. Perhaps at the same time, central committee members of the recently united opposition party were busy celebrating their honeymoon in Balkhu durbar. And perhaps at the same time, King Gyanendra, our so-called symbol of unity, was busy medaling his son for reasons only they know and care about while his secretary was busy preparing his speech for the democracy day (I prefer to call it "constitutional democracy day").
