The numerican preceeding the books doesn't mean ranking. The ten books are: (for me) 1. Ramayana : Bhanubhakta. (Though translated, it is the greatest book I ever read.It is not a direct translation either. It has Nepali pan.I think its influence in Nepal can't be underestimated.) 2. Lalitya : Lekhanath Paudel 3. Munamadan: Laxmi Prasad Devkota 4.Hitler ra Yahudi: BP Koirala (Still inspires a lot of travel writers. Such a seamless integration of reality and fiction is difficult to find anywhere!) 5. Seto Baagh: Diamond Shamsher (Is there any sajha.com visitor who haven't read this book?) 6.Madhavi : Madan Mani Dixit. (Despite some factual errors, it remains a true epic.) 7.Mutuko Byathaa. Bal krishna Sama . (The first drama after 'Atal Bahadur'.) 8. Pheri Yesto Kahile Nahos: Babu Ram Acharya (Nobody can writer better history!) 9. Basaai: Lila Bahadur Kshetri 10. Ek Palua Anekau Yaam: Daulat Bikram Bista (This not-so-famous Nepali novel is one of the greatest depiction of Terai life!)

It's been almost 10 years since I read a nepali novel or stories. But I do remeber when I read Muna Madan and Mutoko Betha the tears would not stop. I would read Muna Madan again and again and again. Even went to see the natak in nach ghar. I don't remember the acting or anything except somehow I lost one of my shoes! It was such a long time ago. Only when some body mentions the name of Nepali books only then it jolts my memory. For the life of me I cannot think of any title right that I read and liked now besides what you have mentioned Biswo. I even ordered that book Sparsha recommended - a history book. I have yet to finish the first page.

Madhavi.................MM Dixit Ramayan................BB Acarya Basain....................LB Chhetri Mana.....................LD Thapa Maitaghar................LS Bangdel Chapaieka Anuhar......DB Bista Muna Madan.............LP Devkota Shakuntal.................LP Devkota Tarun Tapasi.............LN Poudyal Seto Bagh................DS JBRana These are my top ten (for now, I reserve the right to revise). Has any body read a nepali novel (sensational spy!) called Puchhretara? I also enjoyed "Arko Janma" and "Mero Devta" among many others by Prakas Kobid when I was a kid. There was this movies "surakshya" where Mithun Chakraborty was the gun master G9. I liked that movie a lot...(what about? I don't know, I just did). After a decade Arun Cinema in Rani ran that movie. I gathered some of my friends and told them how great the movie is and we all reached the theater for a great movie. I was so excited.....then..... what a disaster....we all walked out after a while without watching till end. We all agreed....the movie sucked. Perception may change over time.

Hello all Good topic again. It is not easy to declare top ten because there are many dimensions along which the greatness of a book can be measured and unless we clearly state the greatness aspect of the book, I think our choice will be lumpsum. Dimensions of Greatness: (Quite arbitrary. Feel free to disagree.) Most popular - Muna Madan Philosophical showing The meaninglessness of life: Sirish ko Fool (my all time favorite) Love is Aham : Saru Bhakta The wounds of war: Chapayiyeka Anuhar Libido: Narendra Dai (All of BP's) Political Set bagh Social Mukunda Indira, Rupmati, Basain, Naya Sadak ko Geet Classical Lalitya Humour, Satire Jai Bhudi (Aryal - my favorite) and so on. However, I find it easier to declare my top ten in this way: Poem : Ichha Nivandha: Ke Nepal Saano Chha Nivandhaparak Katha: Ardhamudit Nayan ra dubna lageko ghaam Hasya Byangya: Jai Bhudi Katha: Lahuri Bhainsi Nepali literature is very rich so it is not possible to judge it in this way. One useful topic for discussion could be who are the most promising contemporary, literateurs? Our frequent mention of devkota, Lekhnath etc shows that we are still allured by the past and we may not have anybody new to boast of or talk about. Samakaline Sahitya: Who? Which work? Dimension? How it influenced the Nepali society?

One book which certainly should make to top ten of Nepalese books is Ghumne Mech Mathi Andho Manche, a collection of poems from Bhupi Sherchan. Among the many great poets from Nepal, I adore him most for his simple yet heart touching lines. How can we forget Yo Halai Hali Halko Desh Ho. I have been impressed equally by a recent poem by, oh… I forgot his name, he is from Bhojpur and wrote this poem somewhere in US. The poem is something like Tyaha Katai Kehi Namilekai Chha Bhancha Joshi. This poem is based on a guy called Joshi in US begin frustrated about the situation in Nepal. This poem has been very successful to express the feeling and frustration of overseas Nepalese. If somebody has access to this poem, please post in this site. 13-thum

Bhupi's one less well-know 'tukraa' I always remember: Malaai Napiu Bhanne Saathi Haru ho Piyera Ta Hera, Piuna Kati Gaaro Chha Marera Shahid Hune Haru ho Baachera Ta Hera, Jiuna Kati Gaaro Chha. [I'm sure some words are changed, but the essence is same!]

If I had read any books (outside text books) writen by Nepalis, I read the followings: 1. Bhairab Aryal ..... (collection of short Hasya Benga). 2. LP Devkota 's Muna Madan 3. Diamond Shamsher "Basant?", and I gave up the "Seto Bagh" (when I was kid about 10-12years old, how could I understand that high level Seto Bagh). 4. Few more books when I was in Damauli, Tanahu and I was a member of a Library of .... Yuba Club @ Damauli. BTW, any one knows whether that Library still exists? Unfortunately, I do not have passions to read literary books, instead of reading these literary works, I spend more time on reading technical books and now Sajha.com. Hahoo!Guru Run your profanity become SajhaGuru PS: Very soon a book (with my real name annexed) will appear in Amazon.com, then, I might add it in this thread, though, I am scared whether anyone will dare to buy and read it. Its price will be around $100. If anyone interested, please, let me know via email.

I know only one famous song by Agam Singh Giri, Nau Lakh Tara Udaya. Talking about Prakash Kobid novels, i have read a number novels from him. Thas was a phase when we used to read novels by Kobid, Yudhir Thapa and Subash Ghishing (Nelo Choli). I am being nostalgic, remembering those teen years int good old 13-thum. 13-thum

Biswoji, I must have read Madhavi no less than three times. I was overwhelmed and quite impressed by the book. Last time I read Madhavi was some eight years ago. What I would like to know from you, though, is what factual errors are you talking about. Could you explain what errors (factual) are you referring to? ( so, I can go over the book and see what you meant.) Thanks. sparsha Once I was gone to Dhankuta for a one night two days trip. There was this newly built library in Thado bazar (?). I became a member there and checked out a book for the night "Mero Devta". Since I was returning from there the next day, all I had with me was that night. I came back to the hotel I was staying with Mero Devta only to know, unfortunately, that there will be no power at the hotel and the neighborhoor for that evening-night. After dinner, I asked for some candles with a manager and went to my room and started to read. It was the month of July and after ten o'clock I started to feel little warm inside the room. I realized that the windows were shut. I opened up those south facing windows. I didn't know that the waves of fog were waiting outside. As soon as I opened up those windows my room was filled with fog. Felt so relaxed. Fogs kept visiting my room and I kept reading Mero Devta. Completed the novel after midnight and returned it the next day to the library.

Sparshaji: I don't really remember. I guess it was some historical errors. Mr Dixit himself confessed to them in his memoir in one of the newspapers recently. Sparshaji, btw, do you think there is a market for Nepal literary great books in USA for US based Nepalese? Why no one offering it online? May be it is time you roll up your sleeves and think seriously about it:-)
