Anil Baral is an America-raised Nepali film-maker who is finishing up his studies at the prestigious Film School at the New York University (NYU). He was recently in Kathmandu, and we got together for some guff-suff: about films, about the challenge of writing screenplays, about life in Nepal and America, about young people in both countries, American politics and so on. Since Anil -- who has worked in Hollywood as an assisant director in some of the big studio productions -- is presently working on some Nepal-related screenplays, there was much for us to talk about. Anil also mentioned that, for money on the side, he at times produces commercials for business houses: so, if any of you want your Nepal-related business ko commercials, shot in New York, you should get in touch with Anil. Though writing a screenplay is NOT something I am working on at the moment, it was nontheless fun to discuss some ideas with him. Anil will be back in Kathmandu later this summer to shoot a full-length feature film based in Nepal. When that happens, it would be great to see a sensitive, passionate director at work on a theme common to Nepal. oohi ashu
